Do people really do this at receptions? Really?

Tara, on August 24, 2015 at 9:29 AM Posted in Etiquette and Advice 0 38

Dollar Dash- Response from a DJ: The way I do it when I DJ a reception is to have the bride and groom go around with either baskets or pillow cases to all the guests. The premise is that whoever collects the most money gets control of the game controller or tv remote or Netflix for the first month of the marriage. You make it a contest and get the guests excited about it and involved. Most people really enjoy it over having a long drawn out dollar dance. The DJ needs to be involved though and really keep the action going. You make 3 times the money as a dollar dance.

Or this:

Our DJ suggested doing a dance raffle. We bought a bottle of vanilla vodka and a bottle of

Jack Daniels, then the DJ "sold" raffle tickets and randomly picked three guys and three girls (so we danced one full song with each), and then the third guy and girl "won" the booze. It was way less awkward and time consuming than a traditional dollar dance and we still made hundreds of dollars : ).

I just can't believe this would happen. These responses were all in response to having the dollar dance.

Both of those make it seem like they are SO proud that they made so much more money off their guests. Wow! Why don't you just shake them down at the door? You'll make 10x more money that way!

The first one sounds like a popularity contest, not to mention "you make three times as much money as a dollar dance!"

Like if you're going to do that, just charged admission.

I am not a fan of couples trying to make money off of their weddings.

That's how I felt reading these posts @MrsS-the horror!

Someone also posted about auctioning off the bride and groom for the first dance.

Thanks for the validation WW, that this is crazy as I was definitely in the minority trying to persuade a bride not to do the dollar dance, let alone all these other crazy money grabbing things.

I'm still baffled at this concept of making money off people to try to recoup costs. If you need to recoup costs from the people your inviting- have a small event.

Edit: I'm still mortified- and I am a belly -dancer- I get tips and monie showered- it's pretty common in many Turkish/Arabic restaurants to do that. I'd be horrified if I had to do that in a lovely dress with my man.

Is this really the DJs job to assist the bride and groom in soliciting the guests?

Everytime the DJ suggested sounds like huge "for the love of god please don't do this!" things.

Haha this is hilarious. I still don't know what dollar dances are (maybe they don't exist in Manitoba or British Columbia). We had games in our wedding but they were kissing games, not fundraising games.

    You mentioned Michigan.

I just heard about this shit a few months ago when I was listening to the 95.5 show in the morning and the people on the show were just dogging the shit out of these people for doing it.

    So. Awful.
