Typically they want any special requests and must have favorites you want plus a do not play list. They pick the majority based on crowd response.

You have to come up with a whole playlist? What's the DJ's job? Our DJ asked us for specific songs for things like the spotlight dances and cake cutting, but they took care of the majority of the music. He asked us what kinds of music we liked and if we had any specific must play or do not play songs, but they read the room and chose music appropriate for whatever the vibe was (dancing, dinner, etc.). I would ask them how many songs they want in the playlist, but I would also question what you're paying them for if you have to pick all the music.

I agree with PP, what’s the purpose of paying a DJ if you have to come up with the playlist? I would clarify and/or look into hiring someone else. Most DJs want a list of songs for the processional and recessional, reception entrances, spotlight dances, and music for any other reception events. You shouldn’t have to come up with a whole playlist.

Hi Nicole! How long will your event be?? Songs are about 3 and a half minutes long on average, so I'd start by figuring out the length of your reception to see how long you need music for! 🎵
