DJ - Is this a normal policy?

Spainey, on January 8, 2014 at 10:06 PM Posted in Planning 0 26

My fiancé and I are getting married on March 8 in Central Pa, and we met with a new DJ a few days ago, after our first DJ cancelled. The new DJ's inclement weather policy states that he has the right to cancel the event in inclement weather, and we have the option of choosing another date for his services. I emailed him for clarification about whether we would get our money back if he cancelled, and he said he would rely on us to cancel and not make him drive in snow, (meaning we cancel the event). Then he said that if we cancel or if he cancels due to weather, HE KEEPS our entire payment- deposit and balance…even if HE's the one who decides not to come. Our venue has already stated they will not close unless it's a State of Emergency.

Is this a normal policy? I'm hesitant to sign, especially with all the snow this winter!

That's crazy! My fiancé is a DJ and I read this to him he laughed and said to tell you to run.

No-- don't sign that-- if he won't change it for your wedding, find someone else.

My DJ doesn't have anything in the contract for inclement weather. I'm curious to hear what other brides have to say on this one. (If you are truly worried about the weather, you could get wedding insurance which would help recoup some of the losses)

Spainey, I live in Baltimore but I'm getting married in Lancaster, what DJ was that? Just making sure it's not mine and I didn't miss something in the contract haha. But yeah, no, that's not ok.

@Allison - Rockin Out DJ Service out of York. I did my homework, and all his reviews have been really positive - but he kinda talks in circles about this inclement weather policy, and what he has said about it made us worry! Who expects to be paid when THEY choose to cancel their services?

The problem is , he can define anything as "inclement weather" and decide to bail on you.

"inclement weather" is very subjective I would not sign

If you want any suggestions... I was between Roger Campbell with Top Hat Entertainment and Adam McCallister with Birds Nest Productions. Both seemed great but I went with Adam because his package was only slightly more and included uplighting. Both were a little over $1,000 (for a Friday night wedding). I'm pretty sure Adam McCallister is based out of York. I would definitely go with someone else. Good luck with whatever you decide to do!

Not normal. I wouldn't sign him. Like the other ladies said, he could define anything as inclement weather and then you'd be out a dj.

Sounds ridiculous and way too subjective. I would not sign a contract with him, no matter how good of reviews he has. I would try to find someone else.

Ask him what his travel expenses would be( and if he has car insurance and business or event insurance, if he doesnt carry any insurance for his stuff then thats his problem) Most people say youll get a refund minus a 200 $ travel surcharge if the event is cancelled

This would make me run the other direction from him. I wonder how many potential clients he has lost because of this. Look for someone else what does he see as inclimate weather.

That sounds like bad business to me. If the couple cancels due to weather conditions; than the vendors (including the DJ) should give you 100% credit towards a postponement date. Technically, you aren't cancelling you are postponing. I had all of my vendor add an addendum to their contract agreeing to transfer all my monies if I had to postponing due to unexpected emergency.

Personally, if you love everything else about him, I would ask that he pencil in an addendum, clarifying this...because it sounds like he is only covering himself from weddings where the couple cancels in the case of not extreme weather...like rain or wind? Which most likely does not happen often...I mean, who cancels a wedding, for Pete's sake, for bad weather...unless it was unusual for the month and like typhoon or tornado?!

I would look for another DJ. Even if you got a foot of snow the night before your wedding and driving was difficult enough for him to cancel, I highly doubt you would be cancelling/postponing your wedding. The party at your wedding would be pretty weak with no DJ... not to mention you'd still be paying for it??
