DJ - Is this a normal policy?

My fiancé and I are getting married on March 8 in Central Pa, and we met with a new DJ a few days ago, after our first DJ cancelled. The new DJ's inclement weather policy states that he has the right to cancel the event in inclement weather, and we have the option of choosing another date for his services. I emailed him for clarification about whether we would get our money back if he cancelled, and he said he would rely on us to cancel and not make him drive in snow, (meaning we cancel the event). Then he said that if we cancel or if he cancels due to weather, HE KEEPS our entire payment- deposit and balance…even if HE's the one who decides not to come. Our venue has already stated they will not close unless it's a State of Emergency.

Is this a normal policy? I'm hesitant to sign, especially with all the snow this winter!

My contract says this "It is understood that if this is a "Rain or Shine" event, RSP Entertainment, LLC’s compensation is in no way affected by inclement weather. RSP Entertainment, LLC reserves the right, in good faith, to stop or cancel set performance should the weather pose a potential danger to himself, his equipment, or audience."

But that's strictly for outdoors performance. I have him under a tent so he said he won't cancel except for the ceremony if his equipment is in danger, and that I understand.

    Yours doesn't seem that normal...

I agree with everyone else here. I work as a wedding planner and have never seen a vendor write that in the contract, particularly worded that way, and think it could be dangerous. Honestly in our contract, we include that someone will be at your wedding taking care of you no matter what. It's just good business.

Definitely find another DJ or get him to put in writing what that type of weather includes. I wouldn't want to get screwed over just because it rains a little or something.

Red flag! I would not give him the option to cancel! What if he just decides he doesn't feel like it and blames it on the weather?

We went with a larger company and while it was a tad more expensive they at least always have 3 DJ's on standby with tons of backup equipment and the ability to get through any type of weather. Maybe look for something along those line?

We are in FL so we had to ask about Hurricanes. And our DJ said, in that rare event, it would count as a post ponement and we could apply the money to a new date.

    Your DJ sounds sketchy.
