dj didn't play any of my songs

Stephanie, on October 11, 2022 at 12:00 AM Posted in Wedding Reception 0 14
I hired a DJ. Paid him upfront and we were to communicate through messenger. I sent him the songs for the processional and the recessional as well as first dance and father daughter dance. A few days later I sent him my song list as well as my fiancee. I also sent him a timeline and included in that was the dollar dance with a specific time. I hadn't recieved any kind of a response so I finally messaged asking if he was even getting my messages. A few days later he responded that he was. The morning of our wedding at 11:00 he messaged me that he could not make it. But someone would. His replacement came and we spoke and he seemed to have a handle on everything. He said he had the notes from the original DJ. He during the ceremony he cut off songs that weren't supposed to be. Not a big deal. I had his tip in an envelope and didn't want to forget to give it to him so I gave it to him early on. The dance was under way and he wasn't playing g any of the songs I requested. I had to keep going up and requesting songs!! ALL NIGHT! at the end of the night I realized he never even did the dollar dance! My husband and I are independent contractors and we do not receive vacation pay. Every dollar we recieved was going to count! I messaged the DJ when we got back from our honeymoon telling him what happened and all he said was he would talk to the guy. Am I being unreasonable in thinking he should offer some money back to us? I can never be made whole, but I would appreciate him acknowledging that it was kind of a big deal and try to make it right! How do I compel him to do SOMETHING?

I would absolutely ask for money back...after reading your contract. Does it say anything about the music that will be played? One of my friends got married last summer and he played the general genre of music that she had put on her list, not specific songs. In his contract it stated that it's likely not every single song on the playlist would get played, etc etc.

Did you have a contract with the company? Also if you mean Facebook messenger that in my opinion doesn't sound like the most professional means of communication which would have made me skeptical of this company. Professional companies you typically would email or talk to over the phone. Also the fact he wasn't really acknowledging your messages also seems like a pretty major red flag. Did this company have good reviews?

Like Veronica said, this doesn’t sound like a professional company who was using Messenger to communicate.
We communicated with our DJ via calls, texts and emails. We met via Zoom two weeks prior to our wedding to go over all of the details.
Locate a phone number and email and let him know you are not satisfied. Keep at it. Also, you should never tip until the final product is completed.

Yes, the contract said to give him songs for an idea of what I want played, but the songs weren't the vibe I wanted. The dollar dance was specified in the contract!

Get a full refund and don’t take no for an answer. A tip should have never been given because he didn’t do his job as contracted. Also write an honest review to post to Yelp and Google which do not remove them at the vendor’s request, which TheKnot/WW does.

Unreasonable for wanting to get your money back for a job that was never done? Absolutely NOT! You know, others would say you are being “unreasonable” but me personally, paying for my own wedding with my own sweat, picking my own vendors, if I have a contract with you and we are agreeing on something that I am paying you for, then that better get delivered!! Gosh that would piss me off so much. But you are better off keeping your best attitude and maybe write off a message stating something in the terms that you trusted in his business and his word on your wedding day.. Might not do anything in the moment but at least you have set your own peace and trust that karma WILL come around. Sorry this happened to you. I’d be a little pissed.

Thanks for replying. It just sucks, I lived and breathed planning this wedding and reception for months and it consumed my thoughts almost every waking moment for the month before. I have never been so organized or prepared for anything in my life as I was for this! I had EVERY detail covered. I also know that not EVERYTHING is going to go as planned. And it didn't. But this was a detail I assumed I didn't have to worry about! Very frustrating!

It’s honestly refreshing to know that I am not alone feeling “frustrated” and “exhausted” with this whole wedding planning. Like seriously, it should not be this hard on us.

It wasn't hard, I loved every minute of planning it! For me, it was all in the details! It is frustrating when u PAY someone good money to do a job on such an important day and they fail so miserably!

First Congratulations on your wedding and second the Original DJ should have told you this that he could make it weeks before the wedding. But begin tho that he sent someone but for him not to be clear on what you both have been sending to the first DJ. He should have sent that list over and if the second 1 was not clear on which song goes with what moment. He should have contacted either if you so he can be clear of what song had and needed to be played. And for that reason you had couldn't even enjoy your wedding reception because. You had to keep going to him telling this and that when he should of had the song list with him. I wished that you had held off on that tip because it sounds like he wasn't up to snuff. So I hope that you get some of your money refunded to you.

Hi there do you have a contract with him right. Now this looks like a legal issue now so you can get that other half of money back. I hope that you hear from him soon.
