DIY Wedding Shoes? (I know, ANOTHER shoe post)

Dani, on February 2, 2017 at 12:32 PM Posted in Wedding Attire 0 13

I know there's been a plethora of shoe posts the last couple days, I just didn't want to hijack anyone's thread. I found some shoes I absolutely LOVE on Etsy at the very beginning of my wedding planning, but they were around $400 after shipping (very detailed, custom and handmade). While I love supporting artists, now that I'm much further into it, and splurging in some areas, I need to cut costs in others, and unfortunately, shoes have to be one of the cuts. And before anyone mentions it, I'm not planning on copying any of the artists, I had come up with the design myself, and they were just going to make it. My question is, have any of you DIY'd your shoes for your wedding (or at any other point in time)? What is the difficulty level? And post some pictures! Thanks! ETA: I apparently didn't scroll down far enough to see the other DIY shoe post that was made a few hours before mine. My bad everyone!

I think it depends on what you are looking to do..do you mean just painting or bedazzling or actually creating the shoe from scratch?

Good lord, just decorating! I should have clarified lol. I'm no where near talented enough to actually make a pair of shoes. I'll be starting with a pair of just really plain basic shoes and adding stuff like crystals, lace, glitter ect.

For reference here's a picture of some I liked. Again, they'll be different, not trying to make these exactly, but similar.

I did! Just made this collage at work, since I haven't seen a thread like this. The top is the original shoe. I added glitter to the wedge heel and painted them. So the picture on the bottom right is the work in progress shoe. Then I added the gold glitter elastic, which is to help the shoe stay on better as well as the glitter ribbon around the ankle. The bottom middle picture shoes the buckle I am using to keep the ribbon tight. It was hard to get a picture by myself to shoe this detail. I couldn't find a cute pair of wedges I liked, so I took a pair from my closet that I have never worn and made these. I am pretty excited about them. They aren't perfect, but they are unique to me.

Ooh those look cute! I can come up with ideas all day long, sketch them out. But when it comes to actually doing artsy things.....I get frustrated incredibly easily. If everything isn't perfect or going exactly as planned, I tend to call it quits. Not the best mindset, but luckily it really only applies to arts and crafts.

I have never done this but I think it will be harder than you expect to do something so intricate. You also have to factor in that you might mess up and ruin the shoe and have to buy a new pair. Plus materials add up quick.

I just ordered from Beholden Bridal on etsy. She has something similar and is having a sale on some of her sample shoes at the moment. I might look around more to see if you can find something you like at a lower price.

@Sarah The first picture I posted is a pair of her shoes. I messaged her months ago about a custom pair, and it was almost $400 after shipping. But I'll definitely look into her sale. She's so nice! And I think you're right. It will be incredibly difficult, or at the very least, tedious. And I would definitely be getting like 3 pairs just in case lol. The shoes themselves are just under $20.

Yeah I figured since these shoes were free (since I got them years ago) and the craft stuff was $30 then if they didn't turn out okay then I could just buy a different more generic pair of shoes. I actually originally chose a different trim ribbon with flowers on them, but then decided the gold looked better. You have 10 months before your wedding so you can always try to do something with a cheap pair of shoes and see if it works out. I wouldn't suggest spending a lot on the pair you want to dress up in case it doesn't work out. I didn't want to spend a lot on a pair of shoes that weren't really what I wanted, which is why I went this route. You are probably running into the same problem I was. There are just not many super cute wedges for an affordable price.

Exactly! I mean, there's a lot of really cute shoes out there, but nothing that is screaming out at me. I'm probably just too picky. I'm actually wearing flats for my ceremony and reception. I don't wear heels, unless I'm going to be sitting 95% of the time I'm wearing them. I look like a baby giraffe trying to walk in them, and I really have no desire to build that skill between now and then. BUT. I did want a pair of heels just for some pictures. It sounds silly, but after spending time looking at wedding picture poses, there's a few pictures that I think would just look at little weird with flats. Again, me just being nit picky about every detail. But I really don't want to spend a lot of money on the heels.

I ordered Swarovski crystals and blinged out my shoes. No problem!

Oceankissed, that was part of my plan too. Honestly all the supplies, including 3 pairs of shoes for mess ups, would just barely be over $100.

I added lace to my wedding shoes! I got the lace from JoAnn's and used E6000 glue.
