DIY Pomanders

LadyL, on December 28, 2011 at 3:53 PM Posted in Do It Yourself 0 22

Need your opinions please ...

Is it worth it? Has anyone tried them?

I am thinking of doing the tissue paper one, but I'm a little hesitant about it.

Was it really cheaper? Was it worth the time and effort?

Thanks!

Not with the silk carnations. I've heard that the tissue ones take FOREVER. That was my original plan but I am really happy I went with the carnations. I bought them in bulk online as well as the foam balls.

Was it hard cutting the foam balls in half?

They sell half foam balls at Walmart and maybe at Hobby Lobby. You don't have to cut them. I made the 12 tissue pomanders and I would NOT recommend it to anyone. It took forever and it's hard to get every pomander to look the same. I say go with silk flowers!

They have a diy thing in Brides magazine and lets just say it says it takes like 3 hours to make one who the heck has that much time. I would love to make some for our wedding but yeah not in any chance.

I loved making my pomanders. I did silk flowers (hydrangeas and orchids). Since hydrangea was the main flower one head covered a 5" ball and then I inserted a few orchids aferwards. Each one only took about 20 minutes (and that's with using my glue gun to make sure none will fall out). I say go for it! Here's a pic of mine - if you decide to make them and have any questions just PM me.

BTW - here's a breakdown of the cost:

1 5" ball reg $3.19 but used my 40% off coupon so about $2.00 each

1 Ashland holiday hydrangea stem - reg 5.99 but on sale for 50% so about $3

tulle or ribbon - I bought a whole roll of tulle very cheaply, I think it was about $3.99 and it had yards and yards on it.

All were from Michaels but watch for sales at Hobby Lobby or Walmart too.

That brings the total cost of each pomander to just over $5

    Hope that helps!

I made mine with carnations from Dollar Tree and efavormart.com. I thought they were really easy to make, but mine might be a bit of a different look than what you're looking for.

I did 12 pomanders, but I did the bigger ones with the 6" balls and used silk flowers. It's time consuming and you're gonna need a ton of flowers but they are pretty. here's mine:

I say use the silk flowers...I'm thinking about it also. I did research on youtube and it looks easy. I don't mind the hard work if it means saving a hard earned dollar lol

LOVE Pomanders! I haven't finished all of mine, but I have finished 7 in 2 nights. 2 hours of work each. I have 16 to make. I went the silk flower route (from efavormart) not ridiculously expensive. So if you are DIY Saavy, then I say go for it. I was gonna do organza bows but I love these so much more.

(sorry for the random picture Smiley smile

Thanks a lot ladies! I will most likely be going with the Silk Flowers route. I'm too much of a perfectionist to have worked so hard and the flowers not looking right at the end. I think it might just drive me nuts! LOL!

I love your samples though! You guys are doing such a great job! I might look into more fuller flowers though, so I won't have to use as much. I'll keep you guys posted. Thanks for the help!

@ FurtureMrsHodges: They look great! Did you use silk flowers? How much did you spend approximately for each ball (if you don't mind me asking)?

I bought the balls already cut in half. It took me about 15-20 minutes to make each one. I had some of my bride's maids over one night for a POM & WINE Party and we finished them in a few hours. I made 18. All the silk flowers cost me $25.00 from a site online and then the Foam Balls were 30 or so from online also. PM me if you want to know the sites...
