diy Ideas?

Rachel, on June 20, 2019 at 8:33 AM Posted in Do It Yourself 1 10
My fiance and I are looking to have a ceremony and reception at a more rustic venue. We are looking to cut costs by DIYing since we will have around 150 guests attending. Any DIY tips would be appreciated!

My only DIY tip would be to make sure you price out EVERYTHING to make sure DIY is actually saving you money! I learned that not everything will. Sometimes the materials end up costing just as much if not more (especially if you have redo anything! lol) That was definitely the case with our invitations, our flowers, dessert spread, my veil, and a lot of other random items. Also, make sure what you choose to take on to DIY doesn't overload you with stress and take up all of your time! Smiley smile As a DIY girl for the other 99% of my life (artist is my part time side hustle) I thought DIY was the way to go - but I learned that wasn't always the case! Smiley smile

Here's all of my DIYs so far. We are also having a rustic theme wedding in June. Colors are purple and gray with white accents.

My fiance is going to try and make a cupcake stand like the one in the picture....for some reason, 4 squares of wood is about $175...I in no way want to spend that much for something like that....

I also made a box for people to put their wishes/advice in Smiley smile

I created a signature drink sign. The one in the picture is just a mock outline of it to see how it prints. I'm going to bring it to a copy shop and have it printed on nicer paper and then I will frame it.

The last picture is going to be our card box Smiley smile

Ask around if anyone has wood lying around! DH had some old fence posts that he cut up for me, which I then sanded and stained. Super easy, and I had a bunch of stain left over for other things I thought of down the road (best $11 I spent lol)!

Look for ways ways you can reuse/repurpose in your own house/possessions or even other peoples’ things! I drink wine regularly and since I was already spending money on that, I kept all the dark green bottles and cut the bottoms off. We put them over candles and used them as centerpieces!

Also, be sure you have time to do DIYs. It stacks up pretty quickly, so just be aware!

I only really DIYed some signs and centerpieces. I know it saves money but it doesn't save time, unfortunately

Were also having a rustic themed wedding and I have DIYed a ton of our stuff that has cut costs drastically.
Here is a list of things Ive DIYed along with the total of what the DIY cost me vs what it would have cost to buy already done.

♡Sola Flower Bouquets Actual Cost $198 Cheapest live flowers quote for bouquets only was $580 and I still had to put them together myself. The price was for flowers only.

♡ 7 x Boutonnieres Actual: $32 (I did not order the sola flower kits. Just matched up the colors with my bouquet and bought some nice silk flowers from Michaels on sale) Price for 7x Boutonniere Kits for Sola Flowers $105

    ♡DIY Headpiece Actual cost: $30
    Premade Cost $200+

♡Centerpieces Actual Cost $55 for all 20 centerpieces
Premade Cost: Not really sure, but everything I saw I liked premade was over $50 each

    ♡Cake Plate Actual Cost $9
    Premade Cost: $55+

♡Table Runners Actual Cost $9 for 13 runners total.
Premade Cost: $117 to rent or $135 to buy.

I'm also going to do the following items:
♡Signs (Got our galvanized metal signs from Michaels on sale 6 for $8 (I bought 2 packs) & a friend is making the lettering for free but lettering would have cost about $2/sign otherwise.
♡Buy Bridesmaids Robes & Order their monograms myself (They're $2 on ebay) and each robe is $12 so that's $14each vs $25 each for THE EXACT SAME ROBE.
♡Guest Book - The one I want is a large canvas covered with chalkboard paint and our names & wedding date in the center. Its $55 for the medium one. I should be able to get the canvas & paint for about $25 and friend will make vinyl lettering for the center.

I had mason jars that I painted just like that. I also had a rustic theme. It was super easy and inexpensive. My other DYI stuff was pretty inexpensive as well. Price everything first. Some things were more to DYI. Let me know if I can be any help!

After working at a popular craft store in college and seeing lots of brides, I have one BIG piece of advice:

Know your skill level and budget.

You wouldn't believe how many times I would see brides come in to exchange/return/pick up more items because they bit off more than they could chew. Not everything needs to be DIY-ed to save money. For instance, I ordered all of my printed items during Vistaprint sales because I knew I wasn't going to have the patience to make up 60+ invitations myself.
