DIY guestbook/tablecloth?

SeaOtter, on July 24, 2013 at 11:57 AM Posted in Do It Yourself 0 6

When I was little, my dad used to take me to a restaurant with brown paper tablecloths you could color on and take home. He actually took my stepmother there and proposed to her through a game of Hangman! So I was thinking, what if we had everyone sign our tablecloth? And then we could take it out and use it when we host family dinners, holidays, etc? Maybe we could have people keep adding to it over the years?

My only concern is how to preserve it. Would the ink come off over time in the wash? Does anyone have anyone any ideas of how to preserve it over the years?

I think the table cloth idea is super cute, but I would suggest displaying it rather than using it. I think the ink would definitely come out or fade over time if you washed it. Perhaps you can display it in a frame or shadow box in your dining room?

I love the idea of displaying it rather than using it. I did see something on Pinterest, that someone embroidered over the ink every year, but I don't know anyone who embroiders and I don't know anyone who does! Displaying it is a fantastic option, since I love home decor as well!

I think it's also an Chinese (not sure if other Asian cultures do this as well) tradition. The guests sign a bright red silk cloth with the names of the bride and groom embroidered in gold. Kinda gaudy (bright red and gold) to be hanging in my house (imo), but your idea is definetly doable.

I'm going the embroidery route, but with quilt squares instead of a tablecloth Smiley smile

Fabric pens might work-- You heat set the ink with an iron or in the dryer, and then it doesn't wash out.

Fabric pens would be your best option, but over time the ink would probably fade with repeated washing.
