DIY Centerpiece help!

Erika, on February 13, 2015 at 1:50 PM Posted in Do It Yourself 0 23

I am losing sleep over making my own centerpieces for my wedding. I would love to use fresh flowers, however I am thinking about the logistics of preparing them getting them delivered and keeping them alive! Any ideas or suggestions? Also if anyone has been doing centerpieces with silk flowers, please advise as to The materials you used and any pictures would be great!

This is similar to what i am doing, i already bought the milk glass vases. I am actually having a florist do the flowers for me and providing the vases but i am sure that you can buy them bulk and keep them in the fridge and just plop them in the bud vases morning of

I'd like to use fake flowers in mine since all I really want is baby's breath, but I can't find any decent looking fake ones!! Eh!

Thanks ladies! I did some research on floral foam and bulk flowers and feel a little better. Rachel, that looks like the vase I will be ordering!

I helped a friend do her own floral centerpieces. She had globe vases and lilies. The lilies were so big they filled up the vase really nice. She got them at the grocery store and we did them up the day before. They looked fine. A little more on the plain side, but it was easy to do (took us about an hour tops), and they were still fresh the next day.

If you do your own florals, just remember to put the stems in lukewarm water. It helps expand the bottoms of the flowers so they drink more. If you use cold water, they'll close up and don't stay fresh as long.

I actually did a combo of DIY centerpieces plus small fresh flower arrangements from a florist. It saved SOOO much stress from having to worry about transporting/setting-up the flowers, but still let me have my crafting moment.

    What I did:

    -pine cones

    -the log candleholders

    -"mercury glass" candleholders

-and I painted the vases to match

The florist added the flowers-- doing small arrangements like this was a lot cheaper than having a true floral only centerpiece, but having the other elements help ensure the table didn't look bare.

There's lots you can do...PINTEREST! haha

I'm making rustic wood planter boxes and i'll be lightly painting a love word or a heart with our initials on them. I will be making paper flowers to go int them as well.

This is a pic of one I'm doing for my mom, so my colors will be different

I am using real flowers and doing them all myself the day before and some the morning of the wedding - I'm not getting married until 6 in the evening, so I will have time. I love flowers, and I have helped out multiple friends with their wedding flowers, but I'm not a professional. I have practiced (and will again) with the flowers I am using. Since we are getting married about 4 hours from where we live, my flowers are very piecemeal...about half are coming from Costco.com, the other half I will be picking up from local farms in 5 gallon buckets. Most have a guaranteed bloom of about 7 days, so I'll be fine (dahlias, hydrangeas, garden roses, delphinium orchids). I am also using hops that we grow and some curly willow. I'm making our bouquets, corsages and bouttonierres too...I know it sounds crazy, but for me, it's very doable. And it is so much cheaper than silk or a florist, as I looked into both options. Good luck with silk - but if you decide to do real flowers, practicing can get the time down to something very doable, and online places do free delivery - FedEx overnight or two day.

I think many people forget about wholesale suppliers like BJ's and Costco when creating centerpieces. We plan on ordering baby's breath in bulk from BJ's and using that for the bouquets and centerpieces, which will be twine wrapped jars and wine bottles.

Mine are simple, wine glasses with a silk rosebud and flame-less candles on top. We are not doing the floating rose that is in this picture, only the upside down wine glasses.

Great post. I'm in same dilemma. Yesterday I saw these beautiful lighthouses so grand and tall, gold and wood, like the colors in my wedding, 50% off, but even with the discount they would still come to $40 a piece, and I need 10 of them for each table. I almost bought them which is ridiculous. I'm so screwed. I'm trying to avoid costly florist floral arrangements that will only wither and die. I would prefer my centerpieces to be long lasting if I am going to put any money into it. What is bothering me is there are so many choices that I am so overwhelmed and have no direction. Sorry I couldn't be a help, but I am following!

It depends on what you want. It looks like a lot of helpful suggestions have been made already. If you don't have refrigeration space, I'd either avoid DIY centerpieces altogether or at least just avoid things that open faster in warmer temps (roses, tulips, peonies, etc.) Also, flowers like hydrangea and stock drink A TON of water, and they also prefer cooler temperatures, but they won't be affected by it if it's not straight up HOT. There's a lot to consider - how to pack them properly for delivery, how long it will take to set them up, who will set them up, etc.

I am getting married in winter and having a winter wonderland wedding. As we all know ....in Canada, flowers and trees "die" in the winter . I am opting out for snow, twigs sprayed white and snow tipped pine cones all in a vase. Here is a picture similar but not exactly what I am making. I am lining the base of the vases with "snow". What ya think ladies? I also have incorporated snow tipped pine cones into my wedding theme. My bouquets also have them as well as my cake.
