DIY cardbox instructions, recommendations, etc.?

Cabell, on August 3, 2010 at 12:30 PM Posted in Planning 0 10

I'm starting to think that maybe we should have a cardbox at the hometown reception next month--we got a couple of cards at the DW, but most people had sent registry gifts ahead of time. I'm figuring if the registries don't seem to be getting any hits within a few weeks of the hometown reception, I'll definitely want a cardbox. I checked etsy and it looks like they generally cost between $60-$100 to buy, so making one is probably the way to go.

I know a lot of people here made their own, so... What materials did you use? Can you recommend any websites with instructions? How much did it end up costing to make? Do you feel like DIY was the right choice?

We did the boxes for FSIL's cardbox and it looks great. We just used red ribbon and white fabric from JoAnn Fabrics for the exterior. We also picked up some little red fabric flowers and hot glued them on as decor. They looked great except they had these gold beads in the middle that I painted with a iridescent white nail polish so that they would match the fabric a bit more.

I wish I had pictures to show you. But alas, I did not take any because it's not my wedding and I don't want to post pictures of her stuff. :p

Here's what we're doing, the hardware is relatively inexpensive, and you can re-use the frames afterward (we're giving one to my parents and one to FILs) our frames cost $4 a piece at Walmart for 11x13 frames matted to 8x10.

I think my FMIL covered a shoebox with wrapping paper and it was fine. I know that's not horribly classy or inventive, but it's also quick and not the focal point of any part of the day, so I don't think anyone would be offended if you took the easy route.

I found this to be a bit more challenging than I had anticipated. I first started to use wrapping paper- after rewrapping the box 3 times, FH came to the rescue and wisked me off to the county fair and the fabric store. LOL. When we got back, we tackled the job together- which required both of us to wrap the boxes in fabric at the same time. We used pins to pin the fabric to the boxes and hot glue in other areas where it required tight edges. For the top, I used a rectangle styrofoam floral cube and then proceeded to stick my silk flowers into the foam.

I ended up using a boot box tipped on it's side. I wrapped it in wrapping paper then used satin ribbon. I love it and it was really easy to do
