DIY card box question

KRISTINA, on July 2, 2011 at 7:32 PM Posted in Do It Yourself 0 16

I am going to give DIY card box a try, but I really have no idea how to start one except that you can pick up the boxes at Hobby Lobby lol.

To those of you who have made your own card boxes -

1. Is a square one easier to make than a round one? Was there any certain reason you picked the shape you did?

2. Did you use paint? Fabric? Wrapping Paper? (to color the boxes)

3. If you used fabric or paper, how did you wrap the box so that you didn't have extra anywhere aka give it that smooth look?

4. How big/tall did you make yours? And why?

I already got some ideas in my head on how I am going to decorate it, but any other tips are appreciated. Thanks!

I am glad you asked this question. Because I am trying to work on mine now. But I choose round boxes because my cake is round. I probably do two or three layers.

Michelle L posted some pretty clear pictures of the basics I used for mine. I bought a set of 5 boxes from JoAnns using 50% off coupon - cost me $10. I then used scrapbook paper that had flocking on it (again using coupons - then I get to use the rest of the book of paper for other projects!), $1.89 ribbon, "pearl" bead strand left over from another project, and paper flowers cut with my Cricut machine. I used scrapbooking double sided tape to attach the paper and ribbon to the boxes, good old duct tape to attach boxes to each other from the inside. The only layer using a lid is the bottom layer - the lid is on the bottom so it can be opened to take out the cards. (see my avatar for pic of the cardbox :-) )

Why the size? Gives room for cards to drop from the top to bottom "layer". I only used the larger 3 sizes of the 5 pack of boxes.

I like the square card boxes better, but my cake is round lol.

You know what, Hayley, I didn't even think about youtube!!!! They probably have a ton of "how to" videos on this. *palm in face*

Thanks Michelle, that was pretty easy lol. I LOVED the butterfly stuff you made. And your invitations are great as well as your favor boxes.... Heck, everything you made on that page was great! LOL. You are very crafty.... oh and did I forget to mention that I LOVED the butterfly stuff? lol

@ Karen - Aside from the flowers, I couldn't even tell that you used paper to wrap yours up.

    Thanks ladies for the help!!

I'm using a rectangle shaped box. I found white wrapping paper at The Container Store.

I will then be die-cutting flowers to create 3D flowers for the box. I'm not sure how I'll arrange them on the box but that's what I'm doing. Smiley smile

I will also be die-cutting the word "Cards" and adhering it to the box so people know what it is for.

I used one large square box and wrapped it in a satin fabric. I used a very thin metal ruler to tuck the small excess fabric into the crevices of the box and then put a ribbon along the bottom. I then hot glued strands of pearls on the top and bottom of the ribbon. I painted the "cards" letters and then hot glued them on top of the box. I then super glued the crystal details (that were bought already put together) on the top and sides to add more detail. I used a glue that is in what looks like a spray can to spray the box and put the satin fabric on there. Sorry I can't upload a pic but here is a link to the pic https://static.weddingwire.com/static/wedding/990001_995000/993970/thumbnails/600x600_1308886366121-Cardboxside.jpg If you need any help just let me know and I will do my best to help with whatever I can.

I covered some round boxes with wrapping paper a little while back. If you use modge podge (i prefer Matte rather than Gloss) as adhesive, you can easily make it smooth. Apply it to the box and then put on the wrapping paper, then I like to coat modge podge on top to make the paper flexible and smooth it out. Just watch the paint brush you use to apply the modge podge. Wash it regularly so the glue wont dry and ruin the brush, and to get rid of any color the glue might pick up from the wrapping paper (if you dont wash it the brush will eventually start to transfer color on certain papers).

I used a square shoe box and picked up a round box from michaels. i wrapped it all in moss using sheeted moss from michaels and hot glue and added some other decorative touches. there didn't seem to be a difference in difficulty between the square and the round boxes.
