Disposable vs. real china

So we've booked our caterer for a buffet dinner and for no additional charge they provide clear plastic dinnerware. If we want to upgrade to real china it would be an additional $4/person. Plus an additional $200 for server. Do you think the upgrade is worth it?

I agree with pps, whether or not to upgrade depends on the formality of your wedding, and what you're serving.

BBQ? Plastic is fine. Chicken and steak? Plastic is out of place.

We're doing real, but we're having a plated dinner and a more formal wedding.

I'd at least spring for real silverware! You don't want your guest struggling to eat their food!

If it's a BBQ then go for it! If you are having a more formal event I would pay for the upgrade! Sorry those plates look like what I use for parties at my house...

And I know pp said that no one will notice, but I just went to a formal wedding where plastic was used and everyone noticed.

To do real plates/silverware for us, it was another $3pp. After talking to my planner we decided to have real silverware/ napkins on the tables but nice plastic plates at the buffet.

Disposable all the way. I've been to plenty of weddings that were all very nice and all used disposable.

They have plastic plates that look like real China. I say check those out on Amazon, Sam's club and Costco. But for the cups, I'd say use real glass

Use real China. It would look so much nicer.

If you use disposable I recommend the company smarty had a party. I used them for my wedding and it looked pretty.

I'm using disposable white/silver plates but real flatware, however, my venue is outside and not that formal.

ETA: Also using real napkins. Honestly I don't remember the plates or most of the décor at weddings I've been to. I remember if I had fun.

I would upgrade. Clear plastic looks very cheap and your not going to get a lot on your return from guests gifts. Not saying this is our goal but if it looks cheap guest will be unimpressed and feel like a bbq pinic. If you want, there are different options of disposable plates and cutlery you should look into. Amazon.com.

Glad you posted this because I was on the fence myself.. Our caterer is charging us $3/pp (bc off season, normally it's $5) for gold-rimmed china but I wasn't sure if it was worth it. Good to see everyone's opinions.

It really depends on the type of wedding you're having. If it's a casual bbq wedding, then plastic would make a lot of sense. If your wedding is more on the formal side, plastic would be out of place, and I would think it was a little weird. It also depends on the type of food you're serving. No one wants to cut steak with a plastic knife.

Plastic is for your 4th of July bar-be-que. This a wedding. Use the china.

I agree, it depends on the food type and the wedding vibe.

Disposable is fine. Just remember people are coming to your wedding to celebrate you and your future husband. Everyone will still have fun regardless of the dishes, as long as the food is good! But you can use chargers under the plates to add a little more style. Save your money for the honeymoon : )
