Disposable vs. real china

Kelly, on May 30, 2017 at 1:54 PM Posted in Planning 1 42

So we've booked our caterer for a buffet dinner and for no additional charge they provide clear plastic dinnerware. If we want to upgrade to real china it would be an additional $4/person. Plus an additional $200 for server. Do you think the upgrade is worth it?

Probably a UO, but disposable reminds me of school picnics.

Yes, use real china. IMO plastic is for parties not weddings.

What are you serving? Plastic utensils are horrible to use on steaks. Also, do you have to use your caterer's china or would you be able to rent from a party supply store? $4.00 is high in my area. My highest quote for china & silver service was only $3.00 for a complete set with stemware.

Use real china and flatware. The upgrade is totally worth it.

If you think of how many items you need for a place setting, 4.00 is screaming reasonable.

I plan to use plastic ...not clear plastic. They sell plastic ware that looks like genuine silverware, plates, etc.

I would absolutely upgrade. I have never been to a wedding that used disposable plates and utensils.

It's only $4pp for real china? Including silverware, cups, etc? That's a STEAL. I think it's totally worth it.

I choose the disposable china they sale in bulk at sams club and they came with the nice silver utensils it doesn't look cheap at all . I choose not to do real china because they can brake and that's a extra fee but I am doing my drinking glass in real glass

There will be people to disagree with me on this BUT we are using disposable plates and silverware. Not the clear plastic kind but the type that look real but are plastic. Obviously people will know they are fake but the look of them is a little more classy than the regular clear plastic. We are paying for our own wedding and so adding $4 a person more for dishes would not be an option for us. Of course if it is in your budget and will fit your decor/venue go for it. IMO the dishes that look real but are not will be just fine for our rustic chic backyard nuptials.

I think the clear plastic screams backyard bbq. How many people are you planning to have?

Personally, I would upgrade, or try to find something nicer within budget.

I don't think $4pp is a lot for real dinnerware. But I understand hesitating to pay more than you need to. Consider your wedding vibe and menu before making this decision. Disposable dishes seem very informal and can make a lot of foods hard to eat.

I would definitely recommend using real. I went to a wedding recently that had plastic that looked real and trust me, everyone noticed. Cutting a steak with a plastic knife is not fun. Can you bring your own? Dollar tree actually has nice plates and silverware for $1 a plate. I think it's 4 forks for $1. That would be cheaper than renting theirs depending on what it includes.

I would use plastic (doing the same, however Im having a small family reception with 30ppl). I haven't seen my caterers plate ware yet but if I don't like it im just going to Sams club and buying my own lol They have ones that look like real china for cheap.

Go with the plastic. $4pp can get rather expensive depending how large your guestlist is. Sure in a perfect world we would all have thousands and thousands to spend on our weddings & have everything just perfect, but honestly if your on a budget in the end its just a plate.

This is all based off your crowd, wedding theme/venue etc. We are using plastic but we're having a wood fire pizza buffet with salads and if we want real china we have to rent it and haul it to the venue ourselves and then clean it and bring it back the next day. Not worth it IMO. We are getting married at a barn/meadow site and dinner will be pretty casual. Like PP said - if you're having steak or chicken you will need real silverware and plates.

Totally worth it to upgrade. I don't like plastic plates in general.
