Who do you go to for relationship advice?

Maggie, on March 12, 2019 at 2:05 PM Posted in Family and Relationships 0 15

When you need a bit of relationship advice, who do you go to? Do you call your parents and ask for their wise words? Maybe your best friend tells you how it really is, or a sibling. Who do you go to for relationship advice?

My closest friends! They've all been married for a few years, so they have more experience to draw from.

My parents/my mother (my dad tends to stay out of it unless hes asked something specific). They've been married 37 years and are such a good example of a couple that truly works together. My H (who's parents divorced after 25 year of marriage) even says it's so nice to have my parents as an example of a healthy marriage.

When I was with my ex and I wanted advice, I went to my now fiancé because he knew my relationship with my ex the best (we were all part of a group of friends in college). Now that I’m marrying the guy I went to for advice, I just go to my closest girlfriends Smiley smile

I think your husband is right. You're fortunate to have such an example of a healthy marriage to get advice from. Smiley smile

I go to my boss. He gives wonderful advice and isn't afraid to give me his honest opinion.

I usually go to my FH 😊 We always discuss any issues we have together, we are both excellent listeners & we always find a solution together. Sometimes it might take couple hours of talking lol but it always works!

Another great resource is the work of PhD John Gottman - relationship expert with over 40 years of couple counseling experience. His approach to relationships is very close to mine, but he is much wiser 😃

Depends on the kind of advice.
Sometimes I go to my mom
if I just need to talk, my little sister always listens
my stepmom always provides a Christian point of view
but my best friend is always the most honest with what is best for me.

I typically go to my older sister who's been married only 3 years. However since our engagement we have been receiving premarital counseling from my oldest brother (who is also our officiant) and his wife. They have been married 21 years and have given us great tips.

Lol!!! My therapist. I love it how those who never experienced things are so quick to give unsolicited advice. For example, many people disagree with my decision on keeping my last name. Then I ask them, “have you been divorced? Have your parents been divorced?” The same answers I receive are, “no and no.”

That's so lovely, that you're getting advice from your officiant as well as your brother. It's nice to keep it in the family and that your family provides you with such good advice.

My FH. If we have an issue we make sure to talk and go through what is going on. I am VERY VERY against having outside opinions in our relationship. I feel like as soon as you bring in your mom/sister/best friend they bring in their own agenda and breaks a sphere of trust with your partner as you are devulging moments about them that they have not given permission for you to tell someone else. If we needed more help with an issue, we would go to a neutral third party together.
