NWR: FI trying to quit smoking!

MrsND, on July 30, 2015 at 5:02 PM Posted in Etiquette and Advice 0 13

FI is having dental surgery this fall and his dentist recommended he try to quit smoking. Anyway I'm having a hard time trying to help him out because he's obviously very aggravated and super irritable. I would rather deal with all this attitude then to have him smoke again.

My question is has anyone's SO quit smoking and how did it go?

I quit smoking in May 2012 and FH used to dip which he quit 2 months after me. When I quit, it was really helpful for me to replace the habit so I constantly had lollipops because they helped the hand/mouth habit. FH's thing when he quit was sunflower seeds. I don't remember either of us being to difficult to deal with, but we also worked a lot and probably didn't see each other too much. FH always told me how proud he was of me though, so that helped a lot.

Edit: actually quit in 2012. Time is flying by.

FH uses an e-cig and is "trying" to quit by reducing the nicotine content in the juice he buys (I say "trying" because I don't think he really is and also because I don't think this is a very good method). My friend's dad quit cold turkey and replaced the habit with carrot sticks

Mine is quitting (again)! Smiley smile I'm so excited and not sure what convinced him to try again.

The had part is they have to want it. Also, it's easier when they do something to entertain themselves. When my FH quit the first time cold turkey, he was constantly eating sunflower seeds. This time around he's using the vape I got him, I got him one with nicotine and he's only using it to ween himself off and lowers the nicotine content every week or so. He hasn't been very irritable at all. Well a little at first and once in awhile but I think it's mostly work stress.

Hmmmm my FH has never smoked. I however smoked for 15 years (started early). I have been smoke free for a year and a half now! yay! It rocks. I quit the cheating way though...I allow myself to smoke an vape thing without any nicotine or tobacco when I'm out drinking with friends. That part was the hardest for me, I loved the social part, and kept falling off the wagon after having 1 when drinking. I can't have just one!

I had en ex once upon a time that would tell me to smoke when I was trying to quit when i reached the irritable, aggravated stage (sorry, weird sentence) All you can do is be patient, loving and supportive. It's really hard to stop smoking! Praise him when he brings it up, but don't mention the S word unless he does, If he's not thinking about it, you don't want to remind him Smiley winking I have faith in your FH. I'm sure he can do it!!

I tried an e-cig once after I had quit smoking for a year and it led to me smoking a real one. I don't think they help.

My brother smoked 1.5 - 2 packs a day. When a friend of his died from cancer, he decided to quit. He used the patch for about a month and then he was done -- hasn't smoked since.

Just think of the fabulous honeymoon you'll be able to pay for with the money saved on cigarettes!

Try getting the book "The Easy way to quit smoking" You just read it - while you smoke - it gives you stuff to think about and it actually worked for many of my friends. It worked for me as well for 18 months before I started back up like a dumb dumb.

Acupuncture, acupuncture and more acupuncture. do some research, never heard anyone say it wasn't the best thing ever for quitting smoking and dealing with the cravings and withdrawal.

One of my best friends smokes likes a chimney. He used Chantex to help him quit--and it worked--but then he began to have some digestive problems and stopped taking the meds and began smoking again. It doesn't work for everyone but it might help to get him started.

Thanks girls!! Yeah he tried Chantex but he was having really bad nightmares so he stopped using it. He had a day where he smoked one. I know he still will have really bad days but I try to not discourage him. I'm noticing he's irritable when I know he's stressed and really wants one so I'll just try to back away and give him a breather.

Mine tried Chantex, but it made him crazy/almost suicidal. Then the e-cigarette, but he didn't like the heft. I don't know if he'll ever quit. We watched my mom die of lung cancer, and he's still smoking.

I've been using e-cig for almost a year. It has worked great for me! My FH still smokes. I don't feel left out but do feel better! My nic level is half of what I started at. I consider that accomplishment!
