Number of Colors in Palette

Megan, on January 10, 2018 at 5:40 PM Posted in Style and Décor 0 18
Hello all! I am wondering if I have too few colors in my palette? I am going with royal purple, a silver/gray color (it's about a 35% gray for my fellow graphic artists/designers out there), and white for a total of three colors. However, I've seen others with up to five colors in their palette. Am I doing something wrong with my heirarchy of colors? Or am I just comparing oranges to apples?

If I were to add any color, I'd add orange, since my and FH's alma mater's colors were purple, white, and orange. My date is in September. I hope this extra information helps. TIA for any advice/opinions!

3 is fine. It’s your choice. I think those colors are nice.

We were only planning on two colors so I think you should be fine.

I think that's fine. I personally prefer focusing on one or two colors which seems cleaner and more cohesive. Our colors were burgundy and gold with accents of plaid. My florist used that to create the floral arrangements, wreaths, garlands and bouquets. This is where any extra color came in, but it was a subtle touch. If you really wanted to add orange, you could have your florist incorporate it into the floral arrangements and use it to add a pop of color here and there.

Wow! Thanks everyone for the fast replies! Good to know that I'm on the right track. And @earias, I will definitely consider that when I get to the flowers. Thanks for the input!

Remember that by default most palettes include some green because of the greenery in the florals.

Totally agree with earias! You can add more colors if you want to, but there should really be 1-2 main colors with the rest of the color palette just accenting and supporting the main colors.

Sounds like enough to me. I didn’t really have a color scheme, just touches of gold. My flowers were multi-colored.

Three colors are perfect! I have just two but as others have said, greenery is an accent color with your flowers that is perfect. I think I might incorporate another accent color into my bouquet. But steel blue and blush are my main colors! Smiley smile

You get to have as many or few as you would like. I added cream as one of mine but that was because the other three were pretty vibrant and I wanted to break it up a bit. No rules for how many you need to have.

Ours is 3, red, tangerine, and silver\gray like you're describing. I think you're good with 2 colors, sometimes too many colors makes things look jumbled and thrown together IMO.

2 bright colors like royal purple and orange can look gaudy or more like a tailgate than a wedding if they overwhelm the space, but if you want the 3 you can pull it off, just be careful to balance them out throughout your ceremony and reception spaces.

The three colors are perfect- if you really would love to see some more variety by adding orange you could always incorporate it into bouquets!

I agree with this. Have the main colors you picked. Than maybe some accents that pull it all together.

I’m doing pink and gold. Boys will be in French blue tuxedos but that’s it. Everything else will be pink or gold, mostly gold accents for us. We’ll have gold chargers with either pink or white napkins.

I'm doing pink and silver as the main colors and white and green as the accent colors.

I am using 3 colors. Our accent colors are crimson and cobalt blue as those are our favorite colors. The primary color is purple because that's what happens when you mix red and blue. I kind of want the symbolism, of taking our separate selves and combining them into one new family, to be present through out the wedding.
