KWR:Is anybody in grad school and wedding planning?

kelly, on March 2, 2016 at 3:45 PM Posted in Community Conversations 0 22

I plan on starting my Masters in Public Health part time the spring semester before my wedding. I'd only be taking one class but also working full time/ commuting to class once or twice a week/doing homework. So I was just looking for some tips to keep myself from going crazy during that time Smiley smile

I'm in grad school and I am going crazy haha. I'm currently working four days a week and class the other three. The days I have class I'm trying to devote specifically to homework and that way I have the other days to devote to work and wedding planning. You just have to find balance.

I just finished my class two weeks ago and I am taking a 6 month break. I go back two weeks before the wedding. That should be fun! Lol

Kristina, you're brave going back right before the wedding! Lolz, I wouldn't be able to focus at all. And Cierra, yea I think I'll definitely be utilizing my daily planner even more than I already do now. That way I'll be able to visualize the balance.

That's me! I am dying. I have two papers due tonight (that I've spent all week researching for and can't find any credible resources) plus a meeting with a florist. This florist may have the meeting cancelled at this rate.

I'm not in grad school but I'm working 50 plus hours a week and taking ARE exams (7 architecture exams - typically takes 2 years to complete).

I try to dedicate 2 hours each day M-TH to studying, 6-8 hours on weekends. I take Fridays off from studying and do wedding stuff or just relax, then choose either Sat or Sun to study/do household stuff, the other day dedicate to wedding tasks.

It's all about balancing your school/study time, work time, and free time. Sometimes I use my lunch hour to tackle random wedding stuff, or get up a little earlier to study, etc.

It helps to establish a calendar/schedule for each area. I put it all in my google calendar to help keep me focused.

Thank you for the words of advice, it is definitely making it seem more manageable with something that can be overwhelming.

I wasn't wedding planning during grad school, but I was working full time and going to school full time and my kids were little. Just don't get behind! You'll be ok. The first semester is the toughest Smiley smile

Both FH and I are in grad school and working full time, no idea why we did this to ourselves. All we have time to do together is study and wedding planning.

Stay organized and work ahead as much as possible. Also be communicative with everyone this effects, FH, your family, your employer, etc. When I tell everyone a month in advance that I will be in a study hole during finals week, they are pretty understanding about it.

I got engaged the day before my B.A. graduation and got married the summer after my first year. Planning wasn't too bad-the hardest part was that planning was WAY more fun than school so sometimes I spent more time on the wedding than I should have. One girl in my cohort got married in March during our first year, and she said that was a terrible idea, but since you have a few weeks between finals and the wedding, you should be fine. Just don't expect to get a ton done on your thesis or project over the summer.

@Kelly I am currently getting my masters in public health! (Specifically Epi). I go to school full time, work, and still manage to wedding plan! Where are you thinking about going to school?

I am too! I swear it's so hard to balance everything. I don't know what I'm going to do post-wedding I'm going to have so much free time! I've been trying to get my fiancee more involved but it's been hard. I think the best thing to do is to delegate as much as you can! It's hard because I want to make every single decision but I would rather be a sounding board than doing the actual research and hard planning things. Phew

@gonnabmrs.p! Ahh yay! I'm planning on going to UMass Lowell because I live about a half hour away, and because I work for UMass Amherst Extension it only makes sense for me to choose a UMass school to get the invaluable tuition benefits. Where are you getting yours?

I'm done planning, obviously, but I went back to school after my wedding. I think you've gotten good advice about scheduling! My biggest issue with grad school has been feeling like I have no downtime, which ends up making me more tired and slows down my work. Also, if you can get as much planning as possible done before you go back to school, that will help you out.

I'm finishing up loose ends with my Masters right now. My trick is my mom! She is a heck of a lot closer to our venue in DE than I am in AZ. I also like to look at wedding ideas when I take a break from working to clear my mind.

I've been working on my masters for the past 4 years! I work full time (50ish hours a week) and take one class per semester because that's all my workplace will reimburse. You can do it!

Thank you @annakay! That's exactly what I plan on doing, just one class at a time and so I can actually enjoy what I'm learning Smiley smile I know it won't be "easy" but it'll still be great!

I am in my second year of my MSN program (changed my major). I also work FT and during the summers, we have FH children. To keep myself sane, I am taking a session off. It works out to be 6 weeks before and 2 weeks after the wedding.

I learned when I went back to complete my undergrad that you have to decide what things you can let go of. The house may not be spotless and the laundry piles up, but school will eventually come to an end.

I'm going back to school next month for a Computer Information Systems associates degree after having been out of school for years (graduated with BA in 2008, took post bac classes in 2010 - all for a useless degree and a grad program I never started). It's going to be interesting how this turns out. lol So glad I'm not the only one.
