DIY Flowchart... A must see before deciding to go with a Project

Rachel, on July 4, 2011 at 11:18 AM Posted in Do It Yourself 0 18

A fellow knottie found this chart on wedding bee, and I wish I had found this before starting some of the projects I got myself into. I think we all want the wedding to be truly ours, and really want to add some unique touches, but lets admit it... sometimes DIY can cost more than if you bought it somewhere or had someone else make it for you. Check out the chart here!

On another note, which DIY project for you ended up being more hassle than you bargained for?

Thanks for the link! I'm about to start DIY stuff this week..I think I'm scaling down some ideas I had since I am relatively short on skills and time lol. So I'll stick to the things that don't require much talent at all! Also I think many are inclined to use a iffy DIY just because of the time and money that went into it, it's hard to toss a finished product!

My petal curtain was a serious pain in the rear. I am adding a picture, so that you could see what it looks like, but just so you know, that is only of HALF the curtain. There are 4,320 petals in that photo, and 8,640 petals total. My thumb was cracking and bleeding while I was making it, and I spent MONTHS working on it. I also work about 50-60 hours/week, so most of my spare time went into that thing.

I'm actually still not completely done with it, but I'm really, really sick and tired of working with petals right now.

I love the petal curtain, but refuse to spend that much time and work on one lol. That's just too much - but your hard work really did pay off! =)

I haven't started any of my DIY projects yets, but I do know that there is a risk that it may be easier and/or cheaper to just buy something than to make it. BUT what is so good about DIY is of course - the reason why we all want to - to save money... BUT now that I think about, I think I probably would still do all my DIY projects (as long as it came out good lol) even if it came out to be the same price as just buying because it adds more personal elements and touches to your wedding that an already bought item just wouldn't.

I started on my flowers, and it hasn't really become a pain yet, all I'm doing is cutting paper at the moment, I'll have three sizes of flowers 4", 3" and 2"(petal squares), so I have two reams of paper that each have 500 sheets, I'll be making the 4" and 3" squares and buying another ream to make the 2" squares out of later...I have some work ahead of me but I planned on it taking awhile so I started it early...can't wait for my buttons to come in (they're going to be the center of my flowers)

That petal curtain is so nice! I want it... but I don't have the time to do something like that, and I think I'd get too frustrated and probably end up throwing a fit after one string... Good job tho!

The one thing I'd add to that chart is, "Do you really need it at all?" If you're making things to save money, you could save even more money--not to mention time--by not having those things. In some instances, you may decide that the time and expense are worth it to you. But do remember at least to ask the question before deciding whether to make something.

I'm not a DIY bride at all. I did consider DIY menu cads but honestly at the end of the day I'll probably just have it made. I don't have the time or patience to DIY. I prefer to pay someone to make it happen.

Esther-- you have more patience than the dali lama. Seriously between the shoes and the curtain, I think you are some sort of saint.

Remind me if I ever go through this again, that I need to make you my MOH and have you DIY everything!! haha
