Bridal Photo Dilemma

Emily, on January 30, 2012 at 10:52 PM Posted in Etiquette and Advice 0 8

I found a place I would really like to do my bridal photos at, but the drawback is that I would have to wear my dress to the location. I feel uneasy about wearing my dress in the car for 45 minutes each way. What can I do to make sure my dress does not get damaged in the car?

Can you put on the dress after you get there? Changing room or something?

Or (if your dress allows) wear a tank top underneath? even if you have to not wear the straps and just tuck them in. and a pair of pants or shorts that are slim fitting and you can see. that way you can put your dress in a garment bag and put it on when you get there.

My photographer suggested laying a clean sheet over the car seat and floor, then having someone help you into the car so your dress doesn't get caught. For my first wedding, I got ready at home. It was also snowing. But, my dad vacuumed his car and walked me in with an umbrella (it made a great photo) and my dress was pristine.

Thanks @ Miss Michal! I will definitely have a sheet in the car. I hadn't thought of that before.

What have you ladies done to keep your dress from getting dirty during the bridal portraits? I am afraid of getting dirt and other unwanted things on my dress! Any tips would be greatly appreciated

Bring a long a helper (2 would be better) to help carry your dress to keep it from dragging. Bring a couple of white sheets...one for the car...and then one to bring with you (this way, should you want, you can put the sheet down on the ground or a bench or wall for a seated pose). Depending on the material of your dress, a never used feather duster would be great for dusting off light sand or dirt (make sure it's not some new fangled thing with a chemical on it). Is there a hotel nearby that you could change in the bathroom? This might make it easier so that you could change before & after the shoot. Also, remember your shoes. Bring flip flops to walk around in...and then put your shoes on for the photos. If there is a chance the ground may be damp and you have satin shoes, they will be ruined. It might be a good idea to have some "backup" shoes to wear for your session and save yours for the day of.

    Good luck and have fun!!

When I take clients on location for portrait sessions I bring along a small pop-up changing room. It sets up instantly, allows you to stand, and it's totally private. Cost is about $50.

I think you could figure out a way to put it on at the location..even if it's just your MOH holding up a sheet or something...I wouldn't want to wear my dress for 45 mins in the car.

You can't be worried about getting a little dirt on it or it getting wrinkled...it's going to happen and freaking out will only cause stress and for you not to enjoy your bridal session. Just accept that you'll have to get it cleaned and pressed after the portraits and before the wedding. There's no way around that.

My altering lady suggested that I invest in a hand-held steam cleaner...that way my MOH can touch up the dress right before the pictures and right before I walk down the aisle.
