Dinner Reception - still have a first dance?

Kaegurl, on February 2, 2014 at 7:39 PM Posted in Etiquette and Advice 0 7

We're having an intimate wedding of 40 guests at a very nice restaurant. We booked a private room and the room itself is quite large. It will be outfitted with two long tables which will seat 20. The room is large enough for a gift and cake tables, etc. plus we're bringing in cake, decor, flowers, etc. The room has the capability of having surround sound. Can we still do a first dance? Would that be weird?

Obviously it will be dinner, drinks, and cake cutting, but I thought it would be nice to incorporate our first dance and a father/daughter dance. Would that be too weird? Anyone done this? Would it be out of place ... when would we do this ... when we first arrive at the venue?

Edit: We would be playing music in the background throughout the whole dinner.

Will the restaurant let you bring in music? Will you only have music for the dancing? It might look a little odd, but if it's what you want...

I think it would still be okay to have a first dance and FDD. The best time would be right when you get to the venue, or right after the toasts, since both times you would have everyone's attention. People will love to see you all dancing, so it would not be weird. Plus, it's your day, do what you want!

@Erica They have the ability to play music throughout the whole dinner. They said its up to us if we want to utilize it. I'm not sure I want to do it (the dance) ... everyone just keeps asking about our first dance and I wasn't planning on doing it b/c of the type of reception it is ...

@Babebet I think if we did it right after we arrive it won't be too weird. We were going to play music throughout dinner anyway so it won't be completely out of place, I guess.

Thanks ladies. I'll think about it some more. I was worried it would be too weird and out of place, but if done at the beginning it might work (like when we first arrive at the venue!).
