Different Photographer for Engagement Photos and Wedding Photos?

Kylee, on October 21, 2020 at 7:51 PM Posted in Planning 0 14

Our wedding is 2 years out and we decided to book our engagement photos session now for 2021 with a photographer that was recommended to us. A little while after, a family friend who started doing photography for weddings reached out to us and offered to do our wedding photos and for a better price that fits our budget more, and her photography is very good. The problem is we already hired someone for our engagement photos and we really don't want to cancel on them, however, we've been told numerous times that you should always use the same photographer for both your engagement photos and your wedding photos. We personally don't mind if both sets of photos look a little different from each other and I know it's technically our choice but I still would appreciate your opinions on this! Have any of you used two different photographers? If so, did you regret it or did it turn out fine in the end? Thank you in advance!

Yes!! I used a photographer for 5 engagement sessions, and a boudoir. Then we hired a different photographer for the wedding!

Yes. I love pictures so we actually did more than once. Let me explain, we actually took wedding photos when we went to Asia last year. Apparently, it’s a common thing to take photos before you get married over there. Then, we hired a photographer for our wedding, but we have a tea ceremony so she made us choose either tea ceremony or engagement photos so we didn’t take engagement photos with her.

Then we took pictures again Bc we won a free session. Fourth, due to Covid, we have to postpone our wedding but our videographer can’t do our new date so he offered another photo session.

Um no. I don't think one has to use the same photographer for both the engagement and wedding. I can see the pros to it, such as knowing wjat to expect in terms of quality and creativity on your wedding day since you've been serviced by the photographer previously during engagement; BUT it's certainly not a requirement or social rule. I will be using a diff photographer for my wedding. I loved my engagement photographer, but I do not want to pay his way to our destination wedding location wich is 7 hour drive or 1 hour flight away.

I do think there are some pros to using the same photographer. A week before our wedding, our photographer had us note for her which photos we liked most from our engagement shoot in terms of posing, so that she could make sure to capture them for the wedding. But I think in a situation like yours there are more pros in having separate photographers if the main one is more budget friendly. I know plenty of people who had different photographers for engagement photos vs wedding photos with no problem at all.

We’re opting for no engagement pics & to use all our allotted time for the wedding. If you like the style of both then use both.

Hubs and I found a photographer we loved but she wasn’t available for our wedding day so we did our engagement pics with her and will have a different photographer for the big day.

We will have different photographers for our engagement and wedding. We did our engagement photos with a photographer I loved, but it wasn’t feasible to have her take photos for our destination wedding. While I think there are a lot of advantages to using the same photographer for both, it’s also fun having 2 different vibes/photography styles! Plus, just having that trial run & getting comfortable in front of the lens during your engagement shoot will be helpful for the wedding (even though it will be a different photographer). You can also pick out your favorite photos & poses from your engagement shoot and share them with your wedding photographer so they can get an idea of what you like and don’t like.

You don't have to use the same photographer, actually I have never heard that before lol. I don't see a problem with switching them

My wedding is in August so I don't know if I'm going to regret it or not yet. But I had my brothers girlfriend do our engagement photos a year ago. She is a wedding photographer and offered to do them for free as a wedding gift. So we took her up on her offer. A year before the wedding I found out a good friend of mine just started up her photography business so I asked her if she could take our wedding photos. She's charging us $500 which is well within our budget and we are helping her out with her business. We don't mind if the photos are a tad bit different. We decided before I hired her not to go expensive with photos because it's something we will probably look at once a year if that for a couple of years until we finally put the wedding album away for good to collect dust. Yes we want pictures but they weren't something we thought we need to spend an arm and a leg on.

I hadn't heard about having the same photographer for engagement and wedding before joining this forum, to be honest. Friends have either had different photographers or skipped engagement photos all together.

My engagement photos were done by a randomly-assigned photographer from Candidly, my elopement (thanks covid) in a different state was a photographer I found last minute, and my (rescheduled/postponed) wedding in yet another state has different photographers. All the pictures thus far are good, and I don't think having the same photographer the whole time would've made a difference.

We used a different photographer for our engagement shoot and wedding. We were booking our wedding with a friend of my husband but she was going to move (though with Covid that didn't end up happening) and so we booked someone else for the wedding. But she offered us engagement photos for a steal. Otherwise, we probably wouldn't have done an engagement shoot at all. Yes, there are definitely pros to using the same person (you get more comfortable with them, consistent style, etc.), but there's no reason you can't go with whoever's least expensive.
