Did anyone use or is anyone planning to use plastic plates, instead of china/glass at their reception?

Beause we are having a buffet style reception, we believe it would be more beneficial/budget friendly to use nice plastic plates instead of real ones at our reception. What you think?

@ LD when are people NOT talking. seriously? Spending money one may or may not have is not going to stop people from talking. They will ALWAYS find something. I think it best not to base decisions on whether or not "people will talk" ya know.

I would truthfully find it beyond tacky if I went to a wedding and they used plastic ... BUT cheat them on it ... make it look real ... an ex-friend of mine did that for hers, until she told me they were plastic I HAD NO IDEA! So cheat them on it! I like what you posted.

The place where we are having the reception provides all the china, silverware, glasses, and linen.

If plastic is in your budget, then so be it. If at any time they need to use a knife to cut up meat (or parents cutting up smaller portions for the kids), that may be troublesome. Good luck!

I was at an outdoor wedding in Sept. that had a buffet style dinner and the plates were those clear plastic kind and they used plastic utensils. There weren't even place settings. Guests had to grab their plate and utensils at the buffet, cafeteria style. I am sure that there are plenty of people out there who DO notice these things and think it is tacky but I honestly didn't even realize we didn't have a set table until we got to the buffet and it didn't phase me.

I personally wouldn't use plastic at my wedding but that's just because it's not my style. I wouldn't judge anyone else for it nor do I think it's tacky. I think that what seems tacky to some people is smart and practical to others.

Everyone is different ya know. Weddings have become a billion dollar business, I remind myself of that daily and it helps me refocus on the REAL meaning behind a marriage. I doubt some one will be so offended by the use of plastic at a wedding that they cant bring themselves to eat, and if they are THAT dramatic the hostess should have done a better job editing the guest list, LOL

    @ Kimberly L : Smiley smile lol

We used plastic. We did a buffet and our wedding was not formal. Costco used to (I've never seen them again) sell these really nice plastic plates that almost look real (just weigh alot less, lol) and my parents, to this day, are still using them!

Unless its some type of sit down dinner/black tie event, I wouldn't even be paying attention to what my food is served on. But thats just me.

I like the clear plates shown in your post can you PM me the site you found the plates at they are gorgeous.

Our venue offered the plastic for the buffet style but if we went with family style they do all china. It was only $2 more per plate so we went with it. Just for me personally I didn't want the plastic cups...

Snarky alert: are you also having a cash bar and making guests pay for their own parking?

My point is...plastic alone is not so nice, but guests might overlook. Plastic combined with other shortcuts is going to tick people off.

I'm going to be using clear plastic plates for the appetizers since we are providing them ourselves outside of the catering the venue does. We also opted to do the cake cutting/serving ourselves (my aunt is a caterer so she will be recruiting a few of my cousins to help cut and serve) because the venue wanted to charge $150 to have one person cut and two people serve. We're using clear plastic for this as well.

Ok, let me try to respond......Thanks Kimberly L. and Kimberly M. - good looking out. LD, I'm sorry if you have mean ppl in your life who talk about each other behind their back, but thankfully I don't. However, if they talk, it's their opinions and you know opinions are like a holes, everyone has one. Rebecca, no kids will be at my wedding, so that's not going to be a problem and the food that will be served will be easily cut w/ the silverware I provide. Cessily, I will PM you. Amy O., not sure if you were trying to be funny, but it didn't work. Oh and we're not having a cash bar and the parking is free - if that eases your mind. Yolanda, could you PM me the site where you got those plates b/c they are gorgeous.

I think Amy O's point was that plastic isn't going to make or break your reception.

We aren't using plastic, I actually took a flying leap into insanity and now we have 150 place settings (7 pieces of dishware, 7 pieces of flatware per setting) of white china with a platinum rim in our dining room. I bought them off of a bride that bought them off of a catering business that was going out of business. I paid $550 for all of it which works out to about .26/ piece =). I do have to haul it now though, but thankfully I have generous friends that don't mind carting it to the reception!

Please, please compare plastic vs rental (or purchase!). I see in a comment above that someone is looking at spending $9.99/ 20 plastic stemware glasses... but you can rent glass stemware for .35-.47/ glass in most areas... so plastic isn't always the most cost effective option, which would be the only reason I'd imagine someone would want to use it.

We are using the hard plastic white plates that have a silver rim around them..very sturdy and pretty, and looks just like real china.

I've seen them at bj's, the restaurant store, and costco....BUT...I found the exact same ones at the Dollar Tree Deals Store for 1/2 the price....

the other stores were $79.99 for 104 plates. Dollar store is only $35.00 for 104 plates. And they have the matching salad plate.
