Did anyone regret doing their own makeup for their wedding day?

tingnsmiles, on July 21, 2016 at 7:32 PM Posted in Wedding Attire 0 40

Im considering going to MAC to have them show me how to do my makeup for my wedding day (and buying the suggested products there also). I can do the basics but I don't wear makeup often so I guess I am looking for a refresher course of sorts. Did anyone do this? Did you regret it?

I had mine done and I am SO HAPPY I did. It was such a relief to not worry about that!

My friend Caitlin did her own makeup for her wedding. She doesn't wear makeup often, but can do the basics and actually frequently sings in shows, for weddings, at church, etc. so knows when to layer on more for the camera/special events. She went to Sephora, had the makeup artists help her pick out products for her skin type, etc. Her choice was mostly for financial reasons. However, she told me that she regretted not having a professional do her wedding makeup. She said her biggest regret was that in pictures, the finishing powder she used ended up making her look really washed out. She chose to pay to have her makeup done as a BM for my wedding, which really surprised me considering she didn't even pay for it for her own wedding, if that gives you any indication on how she regretted it.

Are you sure you want to do this? I dont wear make up but on this day I want a professional to do this. It will be an experience and why not treat yourself.

I would be way too scared to attempt this and I am decent at putting on make up. I say splurge on this day Smiley smile

I wouldn't primarily because professional cameras are a lot more brutal than your cell phone and a filter. Any photographer will tell you makeup for regular life and makeup for pro photos is different. The makeup I had for my e-pics would normally drive me insane to wear but it made for beautiful pictures. I say go pro bc all the MAC products (which is all I buy BTW) will cost way more than an application appointment (which they will do for $50 or if you buy a certain amount of products). Just make an appointment for first thing that morning.

For budget reasons I just can not have a MUA do my make up. I'm planning on doing a similar thing as you are - going to a professional to help me pick out the products ( I really just need a powder that will not wash me out) With so many ridiculous things to spend money on, professional make up just doesn't make the cut for me.

ETA: I did my own make up for the engagement photos and I love them so I don't see why the wedding would be astronomically different

Buying all MAC products will probably be considerably more than paying a pro, and you run the risk of getting products that are not made specifically for photographing. Many makeup a today are mineral based, and while that's great for everyday wear, it's bad for photographs, because the minerals can reflect the flash and make you look more washed out than if you had no makeup at all. A pro MUA will know what to use for this type of situation, and how much to apply to make you look fantastic in photos.

I suck at makeup and hair, so I'm glad I hired professionals.

I'd even check to see if any of the Mac girls would come to you to do your make up. A Mac girl came to my house to do my make up for prom. I just paid her $50. They usually make you buy $50 worth of products when your get it done in the store anyway. It worked out because a few of my friends ended up coming over to get their make up done too.

Just my two cents - if you do have someone do it, do a trial run or three. From past experience, the 'made up' look was not ME not even close to ME and looked too artificial and I didn't think I looked good as a result. Every time I look at those photos I am reminded how much I hated the end result. But we didn't have time to undo it all.

I don't wear much makeup usually, so I've been practicing and I'm thrilled so far with my results - so I'll be doing my own for my wedding.

I am pretty proficient at make up as I'm a professional performer. I am doing my make up for our 'bridals' but I'm paying a professional for the full shebang. Not interested in taking on the stress. I just want to enjoy my day.

Secondly the amount you'll invest in your own make up you aren't likely to reuse is substantial. My weekend travel kit has a 265$ price breakdown for products.

    It's a lot.

Just pay someone. Between the make up your purchases and then the time you invest practicing is probably not worth it.

I did my own makeup, and I sort of did regret it. It wasn't bad, but I really should've gone with a bolder look. We did some pictures after the reception, and you can barely tell I have any makeup on.

MAC products are crazy expensive. They're also texted on animals, which I'm highly against. The last time I went to MAC, I bought concealer and a highlighter and it was $80. You're going to need A LOT more than that. Hire a pro. The pp are right. Professional cameras pick up everything, and if you don't go bold enough it'll look like you aren't even wearing makeup. Hire someone who knows what they're doing. Save yourself time, money, and stress.

I didn't have the budget for a MUA. I don't regret doing my own. My pictures still turned out nice without "official" camera makeup. If you can afford it, go for it, it's one less stress on your day.

I'll let you know in 4 more weeks when the pro photos come in!

In the iPhone photos we took, it doesn't really look like I'm wearing makeup, but that was ok with me-- mostly I wanted to just cover up blemishes. My grandma did tell me she was so glad to see me "in a little lip color," haha. Poor makeup-loving grandma who has no grandchildren/grandchildren-in-law who wear makeup.

But it's not really that much of a money-saving opportunity if you need to go out and buy a full set of makeup. I ended up spending $100+ (starting with a Sephora consultation that requires a $50 purchase, and then filling in the gaps at drug stores and other Sephora visits). I did want to learn to do makeup and stock up though, because I felt like that was a skill I should develop, and I wanted to have stuff ready so I could get dolled up when I want. Now I am addicted to my Sephora Play and Ipsy subscriptions (hence the plus at the end of that $100...) soooo don't count on it being cheaper, haha!

tl;dr: I think it depends on your goals. If you want to have fun practicing and keep it simple, and your goal is to just look a bit more polished, it could work out. But if you're trying to save money, it might not save as much as you think.

I will say I've spent more in makeup than it was going to cost to hire a MUA.

Only time will tell if I regret doing it myself xD

My photographer told me it would be better to get it done. They know how to do your makeup so it looks good on camera. It also would be less stress the morning of to have someone do it for you. If it's about budget I'm sure there's places that can do it for you if you don't want a company coming to you (and it would be cheaper).

I didn't want to hire a professional because I've never been happy with professional makeup when i've had it done at weddings. I went to Sephora and had them recommend products for me. I almost never wear makeup and had nothing to start with. Buying all the products probably cost me more than double what a MUA would have cost me. Part of me still wonders if I should've just had my hair person do my make up also.

The plan was to have my cousin do my makeup, but if she couldn't due to travel plans, I needed to know how to do it as the backup plan. I practiced a bit and it looked ok. My cousin ended up being able to do it (using the makeup I purchased) and it turned out great. Had I had to do it myself, I don't think i would've regretted it. That being said, if you are doing this to save money, you'll end up spending more.
