Destination Wedding: Traveling with Wedding Dress

Hope, on April 17, 2017 at 1:56 PM Posted in Wedding Attire 0 10

Hi All,

Does anyone have advice about traveling with a wedding dress? I'll be flying on American Airlines to my wedding destination. When I called to ask it they could hang it for me if I do a carry on, they said it needs to fit in the overhead compartment or be checked.

I don't want to risk checking me gown. I also don't want to shove it in the overhead compartment with lord knows what else.

Any advice and tips is welcomed and greatly appreciated. Thank you all in advance! Smiley smile

Hey! I'm flying air nz, as they were the only airline who said they would help me and store it in the captains closet if there's space. However it's still going to get folded as it's so long so I'm packing it into my carry on bag instead..

I would pack it as loosely as possible in a carry-on and make arrangements at your destination to have it steamed before the ceremony.

I am flying Southwest for my destination wedding and they suggested purchasing an extra seat for it. I just did a one way ticket since after the wedding I'm not as worried about damage or getting lost. It is an extra expense but might be worth the peace of mind.

I'm planning to put it in a heavy garment bag and then loosely roll it up to fit in a carry-on. My wedding package with the resort includes free streaming for the wedding dress, so I'm not too worried about wrinkles.

As others have said, I would suggest putting it in a garment bag and then carefully rolling it until it fits in a carry-on sized suitcase. This is what I did and what a lot of our brides have done as well. We were even able to fit my husband's suit in the same carry-on. Then as soon as you get to your destination, take it out and let it hang. Do some research about where you can get it steamed before the wedding. So far, none of our brides have had to do that though! I guess it just depends on the material of your dress. The pants from my husband's suit were super wrinkled though, so we ironed them before the wedding day.

I'm flying southwest and we bought an extra ticket for my dress. We got lucky bc it was only $150. I figured it would've costed that much to ship it anyways.

I am concerned about this as well. There are few videos on youtube that explains how to fold your dress in a carry-on bag and avoid wrinkles. Not sure how effective these techniques are, I still think it will get wrinkles. I will be contacting my hotel and my planner to make sure that I will have access to a steamer.

I flew American and had no issue putting my garment bag in the closet. I checked their policies online and it says you can have a 40" bag and it will count as your carry-on (I still also had my "personal" item as well). For both flights the greeting attendants noticed it and directed me to the closet without any objection, and told me not to forget it on the way out.

We are having a destination wedding in June and flying Alaska Air - they just told me that if I ask the flight attendant, they could hang it in the closet in first class for me.

Here is their link for advise on how to pack the dress or his suit for the flight.
