Destination Wedding on a Budget: Hidden costs

Jazmin, on November 1, 2018 at 8:18 AM Posted in Planning 0 7

There are always hidden costs while planning a wedding. These are some of the ones I’ve faced so far:

Currency exchange: I get paid in Dominican pesos and sometimes I have to transfer my money to my US account. My groom gets paid in US dollars and sometimes has to transfer money to my Dominican account. Every time that happens we lose some money for the currency exchange.

Transfer fees: I need to use Paypal for money transfers and they charge me 5.4% plus US $0.30 per transfer. It makes me mad just talking about it.

Alterations: Thank God alterations in the Dominican Republic are so cheap. I only spent US$10 on my dress alterations.

Meeting with vendors: Something that we never thought about was the cost in transportation every time we meet with a vendor.

What hidden costs have you found?

    Hello Jazmin!

I'm sorry to hear that you're finding so many hidden fees while planning your destination wedding! I haven't personally planned a destination wedding, but my cousin is currently planning one and found that the resort is charging a day pass for the guests to enter the resort! Crazy!

I did some research on other hidden costs that can be associated with destination weddings! Here are some of the things I found that might be helpful to consider:

-Any charges for excess baggage on flights

-Shipping costs (for any additional items that your venue might not provide)

-Phone bills (never even thought of this one! Those long distance calls are pricey!)

How many guests are you planning on having at your wedding?

Oh yeah, If you're planning a wedding at a resort 80% of the guests must stay at the resort and the remaining 20% must pay a day pass to attend the wedding. Oh that's a nice list, thank you. We're having 22 guests.

Pictures! Our DW venue was all inclusive. We were told at the consult the Thursday before the wedding that the photographer may chose to do posed pictures. We didn't purchase a posed photo package since we don't really like getting our pictures taken. We were told we could chose 30 photos that were included in the package. Found out when we were sent the photos that the 30 only included the ceremony ones and the "posed" ones that our photographer chose to take were $50 EACH plus 19% taxes and fees.

I’ve used TransferWise to send money back in forth from US/UK. They charge fees but usually theyre better than banks. Maybe check that out.

I never knew that they would charge you for guests staying at another location! 22 guests seems like a perfect number though Smiley smile
