Destination Wedding Brides: How to pack & travel with your wedding dress***

Kimi K, on February 24, 2012 at 9:34 AM Posted in Etiquette and Advice 4 15

It's almost time for me to get going. Our flight leaves bright and early tomorrow morning! First big hurdle to conquer this evening will be packing up my wedding dress. Depending on your flight, some will allow you to use the flight attendant closet. I've heard from my seamstress that she's had a lot of brides expect to be given this opportunity only to be disappointed. If your flight is fully booked, the closet is packed & won't have any room. I’ve got alternatives for you! :o) **please note** Your wedding gown should be with you at all times so prepare to have it as your carry on.

You can pack your dress in a garment bag. Most garment bags are large enough to pack most dresses. I fell in love with the wheelie garment bag samsonite sells. You can also just use a breathable garment bag. Be sure to have 2 (one to put over the bag with the dress) just to ensure the dress is nice and safe.

    Or

You can pack your dress in a duffle bag or into your carry-on luggage. This is what I’ll be doing. Make sure you have some extra plastic dress bags (you can ask your seamstress for the extras) below I’ve got the instructions. I’ll post pictures later this evening once it’s accomplished!

My advice: BOOKMARK THIS WEBSITE!!! http://www.beachbridetobe.com/packingyourdress.html

My seamstress actually showed me exactly how to roll it up at my last appointment. This website has perfect instructions along with some very helpful tips.

Since my wedding dress doesn’t have a long train, I will be leaving it bustled so it’s easier to roll it up. Once we arrive I’ll be taking it out of the plastic & hang it up in the garment bag in the bathroom. The steam from the shower will help eliminate the wrinkles. (This works fabulously for the veils too!)

**Remember: Never try to iron out wrinkles yourself. I’ve heard a hair blow dryer helps relax wrinkles and if need be, contact a professional to do the rest.

Thanks for that. I have also hear of brides using a vacuum seal storage bag and then getting it steamed when they get to their destination.

@Handful, if you roll it in the plastic bag you can roll out all the air. No vacuum seal needed. It works like a charm!

Thank you everyone :o) I aint done posting yet!

We have similar instructions on a Hawaii board that I belong to and it is always helpful. One other note, that I am going to to, is to plan on a seamstress where we are staying to steam it. I plan on doing a TTD shoot while we are there so I will also have her clean it so I can bring it back home. This dress stuff sure is a lot of work.

Keep posting Kimi, can't wait to hear how everything turned out.

Went to the Toronto Bridal Show on Saturday September 6th and I passed by a booth selling personalized garment bags for your bridal party. You could choose the colour of your garment bag and create your own logo with you and your groom-to-be’s name along with your wedding date. The company – OGB Packaging – had packages already put together for us to choose from based on the size of the bridal party. We went with the ‘Bridal Party of 12’’ which included a bridal bag for myself, 6 bridesmaid garment bags, 6 groomsmen garment bags, 6 cocktail bags for your parents, future-in-law’s, and close relatives to use for their eveningwear/suits, and 50 shopping bags perfect for wedding favours or even to carry the million things you’ll need the day of your wedding! We went with the turquoise damask bag, and our logo will be printed in white. Can’t wait to see the final product and get married in the Bahamas!!

The person that did my alterations put my dress in a plastic bag, pressed all the air out, folded it and packed it in my carry on suitcase and it worked great! The dress traveled 6000 miles lol and all went fine! I took it out 1 day before and steamed it and it was ready to go wedding day!
