Dessert only reception...trying to keep it SIMPLE. help

Becky, on March 26, 2014 at 12:52 PM Posted in Planning 0 23

So we are doing a dessert only reception from 3:45-5:30pm on a Sunday (wedding is at 3pm). We are serving punch from 3:20-3:45 while we take a few pictures, then cheesecake and coffee, tea and water after that. While I understand that not everyone will love cheesecake (although how can you not? Smiley smile, we want to keep things simple, if they don't want cheesecake, no big deal. However now I've come to the realization that my own children won't eat cheesecake and maybe I do need to offer another option. I have not yet convinced FH of thisSmiley smile

So....along the lines of SIMPLE....picnic in a park simple.....what do you think I should offer? Here's what I've thought of so far, open to others:

s'mores bar

homemade chocolate chip cookies

caramel apple bites (haven't figure out details...)

I am also potentially open to the idea of something not sweet if it "goes" with our requirements of "fall theme, simple and inexpensive" Smiley smile

You can't go wrong with fruit.

But everything you mentioned above is good too.

I think you have everything covered. Maybe just fresh seasonal fruit.

Kabobs.com has delicious thaw and serve mini dessert options. not too expensive either. I did a test run on some because I had considered a dessert bar but decided on a cake just because we wanted to be more traditional. we LOVED those mini desserts.

What about having a cheese plate with a few types of cheese and crackers? It gives people who might not want all sweet things, an option, and who doesn't love cheese?

Fruit salad with all fresh fruit or Trifle! Since you are getting married in Sept, this recipe for the apple trifle is AWESOME! Can be made the night ahead as well!

I was going to talk about crackers, but Erin beat me to it. You want to have something salty if everything is sweet. If you don't have cheese, I would get those little crackers that come two in a pack, Lance maybe.

The cheese plate sound like a good idea to me. For another sweet item, I would add the chocolate chip cookies. Most people like them. They can be made ahead and there is no fuss or mess to serve them.

Restricting the desserts to after a certain time seems strange, you should just serve it all freely

Plain or flavored popcorn would be simple.

Anisea, It's that the punch is our "cocktail hour" and then the reception is desserts and coffee. I was afraid if it's all served right when the ceremony is over, everyone will have eaten in the half an hour that we're taking pictures. I am still working on the logistics though as it's all basically in the same physical space.

    Cookies!

We're having a dessert only reception. We have a s'mores bar, ice cream bar, fruit, cookies, the cakes, parfaits, pies, donuts, marshmellow pops, etc.

One thing though, I asked our caterer about the caramel apple bites, and she said she wouldn't recommend them! She said the caramel doesn't stay on them very good!

If you're having desert-only, you should have 4-5 different options. Cookies, maybe candy bar, definitely fruit, maybe chocolate fountain.

I would also suggest maybe cheese tray for people who don't want sweets. For fall theme, maybe do a "caramel apple bar"? Sliced apples, caramel dip, and then some toppings- mini chocolate chips, coconut, sprinkles, candy... It would be fairly easy to throw things into dishes, and the ingredients are fairly inexpensive...

I'm doing something like that myself. offically it's a cake and drink reception, but I may add things if I decide to later.

I love cheesecake and am thinking about having it myself. but like you've run into, a lot of people don't care for it. so I'm still deciding.

when I read the list of what you plan to serve, my mouth started to water and I thought invite me! Smiley smile

I will probably have something like a cheese plater, that kind of thing along with the sweets. that's because a few months ago a friend gave me a birthday party where I made the cake. the cake was loaded with sugar, and everyone loved it. problem was the most everyone there isn't used to eating sugar, so after about 30 minutes everyone except me and my groom fell asleep from the sugar crash!

so I think a little protein with all those sweets is a good idea. Smiley smile

I'd add a cheese and fruit tray for people who aren't much for sweets.
