Deployment and Wedding Dates?!

Tiara, on October 21, 2015 at 2:27 PM Posted in Planning 0 2

So my fiance and I had originally chosen a date, June 10, 2017, for the wedding however we're finding out now that there is a high chance of his unit being deployed during 2017. He's active duty army if that matters. We still have no idea exactly when. Would it be better to have the wedding before or after deployment? And usually how far in advance do you find out the date they're deploying as well as pre-deployment leave info and such? Please help! I'm going out of my mind!

Honestly, you might not find out the date of the deployment until less than 30 days beforehand. I would really suggest talking to his superior or whoever is in charge of scheduling asap. We picked our date a year out and my then-fiancé went to the scheduling office and got it on the calendar then. Basically, he scheduled himself for leave a year in advance. If you talk to the right people, I'm sure they'll be willing to work with you.

In terms of before or after, I would say before just so you don't have the anticipation of a wedding hanging over you the whole deployment but after would work well if you think you'd have more time to plan while he's gone.

I would say before. My cousin planned a June 2002 wedding. Then 9/11 happened. Found out Jan 18 she was being deployed, got married Jan 19, shipped out Jan 21. They decided to get married before she left because if anything happened he would have spousal benefits and military health insurance and also active duty incentive pay.
