December Wedding in Southern California

Callie Sue, on May 2, 2017 at 1:07 AM Posted in Planning 0 12

Hi! I've browsed a bit & haven't exactly found an answer to my question, so I figured I'd post it.

My FH is leaving soon for the Navy, & the only time he's guaranteed to be free within the next who-knows-how-long is two weeks around Christmas and New Year. So, we decided to get married the week after Christmas (probably either the 29th or 30th) since the week leading up to then always seems to be more stressful and busy for people. We're getting married in CA b/c that's where most of his family is; my family is all over the country and has to travel no matter what.

I never really wanted a wedding during the holidays (always dreamed of fall), but that doesn't matter to me now because having my Navy groom there is more important than the time of year. Ha. Smiley smile But I DESPERATELY want an outdoor ceremony! So, my question is this: is it unrealistic for me to hope for that in SoCal? FH seems to think it's going to be miserably chilly with wind. I have no reference point b/c I'm from IL.

I wouldn't say miserably cold. It depends on where in Southern California. My image is from the Palm Springs area (desert) and when I go there for the holidays I wear shorts. San Diego is also very nice. OC is hit or miss but should be decently warm. You could always opt for a brunch wedding to hit the heat of the day.

You still have the chance of rain and wind for sure and if it's anything like this past winter you'll be rained out. I'd plan for indoor. This is coming from a southern California resident. You could shoot for outdoor at like the hottest time of day but i would definitely have a plan b indoor

As a socal resident, I'd say that if you really want outdoors I'd look in areas that are warmer(Palm Springs for example) and stay way from the costal areas, because socal in December is definitely a hit or miss. One year it was really warm and last year it wasn't

We had unseasonable warmth this year here just south of Chicago...I think I could count on one hand how many times we got snow, and even less where it actually accumulated. That is NOT normal for my area!

So, we should stick to a warmer area, away from the coast, and definitely make sure to have indoor space just in case. Right? We've been planning on having the reception indoors anyway, so that won't be an issue. I just really really don't want to have our ceremony inside. I think this year may be the first and only time in my life I pray for a heat wave at Christmas. Smiley smile

I live in Southern California and I would just suggest staying away from the coast and the mountains. I don't think that any temperature during our "winter" is miserably cold. I have been in shorts on Christmas. The chances of it raining are slim(it was oddly rainy this year so far), but you could always have a tent rental on back up just in case and the propane heaters just in case.

Southern California is a large area, can you narrow it down some? I agree with others, perhaps the desert. My friend had an outdoor ceremony on Dec 27 and even though it was sunny it was still cold! I would look for a venue that is indoors but has large windows that overlooks the beautiful outdoors!

LA here. I think you might be able to get away with an early day outdoor wedding, but as soon as the sun goes down it's going to be too cold for comfort.

December in San Diego was in the 60s when we went, and even after the sun went down we were not too miserable, so I think the farther south you go, the better. Just keep in mind that San Diego is expensive. I live in SoCal, (and I'm getting married in San Diego in November) so if you want any help finding things and or recommendations, I have a HUGE family and you could message me and I can see if I can help you.

Also, NIS (North Island Naval Station) on Coronado does have a couple of places to get married and/or stay, including the very nice Navy lodge.

I have never been to Palm Springs, but my BFF loves to go there as often as possible, especially in winter, so it is definitely doable as far as weddings in winter.

You could try looking at this site: http://www.weatherplanner.com/weather/index.php

From what I hear, it's been fairly accurate and may help give you an idea, I mean I still wouldn't say that the prediction is 100% correct, just like Farmers Almanac, it's an educated guess. Right now, in the LA area on 12/17/17, it says sunny and low 70's...

Good Luck to you Flor, it ended up working out well for me - got married just over a year ago, and it was sunny at 75* Smiley smile
