December wedding food menu

Sarah , on March 26, 2017 at 8:20 PM Posted in Planning 0 16

I have always envisioned soups and chocolate bar for our December wedding. Now that we are actually planning I'm nervous about it. What can you pair with it other than breads or cracker's? It will be at dinner time so I want it to be filling. Plus do you have them tell you ahead of time what kind and have it waiting at the table or attempt to have them serve themselves and carry it to the table? My mom has also suggested a traditional Christmas dinner with dressing, ham, veggies and such. Ideas? Suggestions? Or what have you seen or done that works?

Soup as it's own course would be fine. Not as a main course.

Honestly every Christmas party we go to seems to serve the same things. Would be nice to have something different at a wedding during this time

    Just soups?

No. The catering in me speaking. You can't let people served themselves and carry it to the table; uber messy. You COULD serve soup as the first course, with breads and cheese served family style. But as a whole meal, it's not going to cut it.

I like your mom's idea too.

I would do soup as the first course. I like the idea of a traditional Christmas dinner..maybe your caterer has some ideas to make the meal more non traditional?

I love a hot soup starter in the winter! Talk to your caterer and see if they can just do one kind of plated soup or if a full soup bar is an option. Maybe UO, but I wouldn't want two big Christmas dinners in one month, so maybe go with a Christmas inspired menu but have something to differentiate your food from a fully traditional dinner.

I got married on December 22nd 2016. I had a plated meal, with alternate drop. You need to have a full meal if it's at dinner time. Either a buffet, plated or family style. The caterer should have menus you can review and pick your selection from. I personally wouldn't want a traditional Christmas dinner at a wedding.

What about a gourmet Mac and cheese bar with various toppings? Or a baked potato bar with salad and sliced beef or meat dish as well? Winter time to me is all about comfort food. Maybe even a pasta bar? I wanted to do a hot chocolate bar at our January wedding; however I did not want to shell out the 5$ per guest when I'm having 250 guests...

Our caterer has the option of adding a soup course in between the salad and the entree, for a minimal additional cost. Yours will probably have some thoughts about when to have it.

I've never seen it at a wedding, but chili is another nice, winter food.

Soups, bread, and chocolate are not filling for more than 20 minutes -- whether it's December or June. Soup and bread and an intro course to the main dish. If you want to go the Christmas dinner route, that's fine, but don't just offer turkey. Offer a beef dish as well.

As someone who doesn't eat soup (I have issues with hot liquids), I'd be super disappointed if soup was the main course. This may not be fancy, but what about variations of grilled cheese sandwiches to go with the soup? Maybe paninis if you wanna dress it up a bit..

I had a Christmas wedding last year. Here's what we did:

Plated meal, starting with salad, then soup. Main entree was either NY strip, stuffed chicken, or butternut squash ravioli. Dessert was wedding cake and tableside S'mores. We had a hot chocolate and apple cider bar as well.

Many caterers offer soup or salad as the first course. Choose soup, then some good comfort food for dinner. Easy!

Thanks everyone! We unfortunately have not found a caterer yet. We have talked to several but none seem to have a menu we want. I definitely want warm comfort foods and for everyone to get full! All great ideas! Thank you for the input!!!

Most wedding caterers offer the wedding staples, which are warm and some would consider comfort foods. Any idea exactly what you're looking for?

Call a couple of caterers and make appointments. Most will work with you.

If you're looking for a caterer in your listed area, may I make a suggestion? A Silverware Affair. They can definitely put together a menu with what you need. For you, I would suggest a stations menu. Get their Hearth station (clam chowder, butternut-apple bisque, crusty rolls) and their grilled cheese station (lots of different cheese and breads, plus tomato soup). Then get a salad station or a green and grilled station for veggies and a carving station for that Christmas component (I'd go with the roast beef, and either the turkey or the ham). If you want, add a mashed potato bar and you're all set!

They can take care of your bar too.

    Check them out!
