David's Bridal Was a Nightmare

Light, on December 18, 2019 at 3:35 AM Posted in Wedding Attire 0 26

Hey Ladies,

I just need to rant to someone other than my SO who doesn't understand my dress dilemma, lol. So Saturday I had my bridal dinner to introduce my bridesmaids to each other and to look for dresses. After dinner, we all headed to David's Bridal to look around at dresses. I had shopped there several times before and always had a lovely experience. Upon walking in my sales associate told me that I had a unique name, my name is Jess... I should have known that there that this wasn't going to be a fun time. I immediately saw a dress I loved that was on the manikin and told her I wanted to try it on. She looked at me shocked and said, how high was your budget again. The dress was just $1,400, not some crazy designer amount. Along with that I picked out some similar designs and let my bridesmaids each pick a dress.

We went back to try on the dress and they wouldn't let my bridesmaids help me, I walked out in front of everyone with unzipped dresses and she kept trying to tell me I need to put on a corset to look slimmer. She even brought me one that was covered in stains. I politely sat it to the side, and she later critiqued me on if I had put it on I'd look better. I eventually got fed up and asked for my bridesmaid to zip the dress, so that the rest of the shop wouldn't get a good view of my Zelda panties. The sleeves of the dress I liked came second and she wouldn't put them on, she used no clips to help the dresses actually fit, they all looked like a hot mess, and she randomly stuck a veil in my hair and completely messed it up.

To make matters worse, I ended up with the entire staff watching me put on dresses, and was highly annoyed even when I found a dress that everyone liked. I decided to go with a shorter dress, with shoes, and a belt. I went to the front to pay and asked how much it was she gave me a total of $550 which was way off from the calculations in my head and I asked if she got everything....low and behold the receipt printed out and the shoes weren't on there but a $150 veil was. I called her out and she said well I can add the shoes on now, sadly those where some bomb shoes and I said fine. I knew that once I signed the first receipt I could only exchange the items for store credit anyway....

I didn't know that the associates where suppose to fit the dress and clip it till I went home, I just figured they all would look like plastic bags on me, since the short one was the only one in my size that I had my bridesmaids help me with. Now I feel like I would have loved my original dresses if they would have fit after doing research online. I'm having major dress regret, and feel like I was just mistreated.

I wasn't dressed up fancy, so maybe they assumed I was lying about my budget? I literally just wore a black graphic tee and pants that where easy to take off, I didn't want to get dressed up nice to throw my clothes in the floor while trying on a million dresses.

That sounds like a terrible experience. You could return it for store credit if you’d like to try on your favorite dress again, or you could sell it and just decide to go elsewhere. If you go back to David’s would you have to use the same associate?

I would make an appt with a new consultant and try on again. Can the dress be returned? Sorry that happened.

Sounds terrible, but it sounds like it was the associate who helped you. She sounds insensitive and even rude at times. Go back, request someone else...you deserve good service for something so important.

Sounds like you got stuck with the worst employee possible. I would go back and speak with the manager. And if that gets you no where, get ahold of the corporate office. I’m sorry you had such an awful time. Hopefully this is the worst part of wedding planning for you.

I would avoid it, all the other ladies I've ever had there have been wonderful. I was just kind of bummed after leaving and then when I found out how mismanaged my appointment was I was mad.

Oh my, I am so sorry you had that experience! shopping for wedding dresses should be fun! I will say, I have heard tons of horror stories about David’s Bridal and witnessed my best friend have a similar experience during her appointment. Nonetheless, I kept seeing this gorgeous dress online and found out it was from David’s bridal, and decided to go there anyway, despite my better judgment. To be honest, I did not have a “horrible” experience... but I definitely did not have a great one either. The girl I worked with did clamp the dress to make sure it fit. But other than that, she did not give any other suggestions for any other dresses, and spent the rest of my appointment trying to push other items on me – shoes, veils, blingy belts, etc. To me, it felt like a high-pressure car dealership. It is certainly not the experience you get at a private boutique. My best advice would be to not settle for a dress if you were not satisfied with it. If you can return it for store credit, I would definitely go back and try on the previous dresses and see if you like them once they are clamped to fit you. If you cannot find anything else you like, you could use the store credit to get your bridesmaids dresses and go elsewhere for your wedding dress.

Honestly, it probably depends on the David's Bridal. I believe you have two weeks to return your dress or any other item - they just started a new policy. If it's been longer than that, you can put your foot down and say you want to exchange- they will 100% let you, I just did this with no hassle - and you'll pay the difference if the new dress is more expensive. My experience wasn't magical, but it was certainly better than that. Saturdays are rough for them - my first Saturday I went in, they had huge gangs of women in a fairly small store since women were bringing their entire bridal party. It was miserable. It's very possible this lady was just exhausted, though that's no excuse for not zipping up the dresses. That's a basic.

I would make a weekday appointment and go back. My first appointment was a monday because I had the day off, and the store was quiet. The consultant and I were able to take our time, study dresses. I think they're pushed super hard to make sales on Sautrdays because that's when everyone normally comes in. Even a Sunday might be better. I'm sorry this happened to you - chin up! They have gorgeous dresses, and you should be able to find something you love.

I'm sorry you had a bad experience, I believe they work off commission too. So you would think they'd have an incentive to be helpful.

I would honestly go to a different location and either return the dress or exchange it. Also I would explain the situation to the Manager.

I'm so sorry that happened to you! I was just at David's Bridal this past Saturday. It was my first appointment so I don't have anything to compare it to, but I wasn't entirely thrilled with my experience either. It wasn't as difficult as yours though and I want to give them the benefit of the doubt and say it was the consultant and not the store itself.

I think my consultant was new as she didn't seem very comfortable with what she was doing. My girls and I showed her the dresses we had picked out for me to try and then she put me in a dressing room while she went to pull the dresses in my size. She gave me a corset and slip to put on, which was fine, but what annoyed me was that a lot of the dresses I wanted to try had low/no backs and I needed to take the corset off. It seemed like I was constantly taking the corset off, then putting it on, just to take it off again. Finally I just told the girl I would face the wall while she helped me into the dresses because I was sick of dealing with that corset.

When I came out in a dress that I really loved, the manager finally came over and told the consultant to give me a veil. She told her to straighten out my train. I feel like these are things she should have known, but like I said, she may have been new.

Seeing you mention your budget, now that I think about it, no one (other than my girls) asked me what my budget was. Luckily we had some idea of the prices of certain dresses since we looked online before we went to the appointment.

I've seen some brides say their experience at David's Bridal was horrible, and some say it was great. I'll admit I was nervous, and while I feel it could have been better, it wasn't the worst time.

All that being said, like others have mentioned, I did see recently that David's Bridal now allows you to return dresses, so maybe that is an option for you. I truly hope everything works out for you and when all is said and done you end up with a dress you love!

Ugh that is horrible. You were treated like an object not a human.

Personally, I would probably file a customer complaint about the associate with the manager. It sounds like other times you visited the store you weren't treated so badly, so it was more of a really unprofessional employee rather than an entire store culture of toxicity and bad service.

If you found other associates there who treated you better, I would see if you could schedule an appointment with one of them to re-look at dresses and try some other styles pinned on you correctly. Since you already put money down, you should be able to switch your deposit to a new dress (or return the one you got, it wasn't entirely clear to me if purchased one off the rack or not).

I’m not sure if anyone else have said it but I’m so sorry that you had to experience that. I had a bad experience as well very similar. I was at the David bridal in Madison heights but now they have a new policy you can now get a full refund. I just got one Monday!

Wow.... I also tried on dresses at David's Bridal. When I told the lady I preferred a dress with little or no train, I swear she rolled her eyes at me! They made me put on that awful corset. I was so uncomfortable! I didn't buy anything. I ended up ordering off Azazie actually - tried on 3 dresses at home and had one made. It fits perfect and I love it.

My bridesmaids DID get their dresses. In October, they told us to come back in December to have them altered (March wedding). I made an appointment a couple weeks ago. The lady I talked to told me they would put in a bustle of the dress I bought elsewhere since we did buy bridesmaid dresses there. The day before someone called me to confirm. They didn't even know my name! They called me by a different name which I repeatedly tried to correct. They didn't know who I was or what time I was supposed to be there. The whole conversation was strange and made me very uncomfortable. I called a local seamstress and decided to use them instead. When I called to cancel the appointment, they STILL didn't know who I was and I was not down on the books and they were calling me a 3rd (wrong) name. Frustrated I finally told them....whoever is supposed to be there at 6pm tomorrow....that's me....and I won't be there because you can't keep your appointments straight. The next morning, I got a text reminder of the appointment. I'm so glad I went with my gut feeling on this....

I got my dress at David’s and had a WONDERFUL experience but I will say I think i hit jackpot with consultants. When I went back to pick up my dress, the consultant was trying to sell me a corset (to go under a thin dress...was way too bulky), a slip that just bunched up under the dress, wouldn’t let my mom help me instead of herself, and was extremely pushy.

I would call the store and ask to speak to the Highest manager in charge and tell them your experience. They should be able to make an exception and do something for you. That’s absolutely ridiculous and I’m so sorry you went through that :/

Sorry you had a horrible experience. Thankfully I had a good experience but still didn’t buy anything in the store. I literally found my size and went on their website and found dresses for half the cost.

I am so sorry to hear about this horrible experience. Every bride deserves reputable service when searching for the dress of their dreams. Definitely contact the store and speak to a manager. They should give you a refund, no exceptions. If you feel that your complaint is not handled delicately, contact corporate for further assistance. Best of luck!
