Custom Wedding Band with Grandma's Diamonds

Bri, on June 12, 2019 at 3:26 PM Posted in Wedding Attire 0 12
Hi everyone! I was given my late grandmother's wedding band which has small marquise diamonds going all around the gold band. I'd love to be able to use a few of the diamonds to incorporate into my wedding band. I'm wondering if anyone has experience in creating their own wedding bands with existing diamonds? Did you go to a chain store like Kay or a small jewelry shop?

Also wondering about the price since I won't be purchasing diamonds for the band, just the metal and bezel work. I'm trying to keep it under $500.

Lastly, does anyone have any ideas for how it should wrap around the ring?

Thanks everyone!

Here's my ring for reference:

Aww! I have the same ring, but with a princess cut center! I love all the detail. If you have a cathedral setting like mine where the center stone sits up above the band then you can do a simple band that will sit just below the center stone and up against the engagement ring band. They should be able to make something custom to fit your diamonds, the band are usually pretty inexpensive its the stones that drive the price up.

    Something similar that would match.

I don't have experience having diamonds reset, but we did have my rings custom made. I can tell you that the chains don't want your custom work. They make their money on what they stock. When it came time for us to have my band made, Jared's was $1000 higher than our local jeweler (who made my e-ring) and the quality wouldn't have been nearly as good. There have been quite a few brides on here with rings from chain stores and lost diamonds because the ring wasn't made well. With such precious stones, I highly recommend getting quotes from a couple local places to see if they can stay in your budget. My guess would be no, as the smaller diamonds don't usually cost a lot. It's the time that goes into designing and making the ring that will drive the price up.

My fiancé had my ring custom made. He bought the diamond separately and then had it set. He used the Jewelry Exchange, which is a chain, but extremely reasonably priced! We went back for our wedding bands and paid under $400 for both his and mine! Also, they negotiate on all prices, which is awesome for scoring deals! Their jeweler is also on-site. So you don’t have to worry about leaving anything. They set my ring in 10 minutes.

It will be expensive to custom make a ring. The bulk of the cost comes from all the work to make the ring. First, they have to create the CAD drawing. Once that's approved, they have to make the mold. Then, they pour the liquid metal into the mold to form the ring. After that, each diamond has to be set. I got my wedding band custom made to match my uniquely shaped engagement ring. My mom is in the jewelry wholesale business (works in the Manhattan Diamond District) and the wholesale jeweler is a work associate who she works with regularly. Even with getting the wholesale price, my very thin wedding band cost me $550. If I were to have to a store, it would have most likely been double.

I would go to a few local jewelers and get a price quote. Just be prepared for some sticker shock!

No expert here either but I would definitely suggest going to local jewelry stores as I don't think the big chains do custom work, they just sale what they have in the cases. I would also be prepared for it to be difficult to stay within your price range. Having the diamonds might help keep the price down some though. Good luck! Your ring is beautiful and its so special to use your grandmas ring!

Have you checked with the jeweler your ring was purchased from? My ring didn't come with a band so we had to have one made, it was around $800. I went to the jeweler my FH purchased my ring from and they contacted the designer to ask about creating the wedding band and they said they would so I sent it off to them and they made the band and sent both rings back in under 2 weeks. Maybe start there and see if the designer is able to create a band using the diamonds that you want! Best of luck!

FH custom created my rings from the stones that were in his grandmother's engagement ring. He shopped around at both chain stores and local one and Kay Jewelers was the least expensive of them all. I'm not sure of the exact cost but it was over $1000 for 3 rings (and I can't remember if he bought the ruby's to go in the rings too). My advice would be to shop around to find out what works best for you.
    These are my rings.

My fiance used the center stone from his grandmother's wedding ring and a new setting to create my engagement ring. His mother insisted that it be done by the independent jeweler she's been going to for decades. She said she didn't trust anyone else to do it. She apparently had been telling the jeweler for at least a year before FH popped the question that her son was going to come in any day now. Lol!

If you, your family or a friend know an independent jeweler and can vouch for their reliability, I would suggest giving them your business. You get their undivided attention as well as their attention to detail with each piece. We went to the same Jeweler for our wedding bands and they are perfect.

    I agree with this.

My mom had her engagement ring redesigned and incorporated diamonds from her mothers ring. The chains said no. They went to a local jeweler that did custom. I would look through yelp reviews of local places and then go there and ask. The Jewelry Exchange could be an exception here... You could also TRY JamesAllen.com but they have a $2K minimum for custom designs. Which I suspect you'll run into locally too. The gold alone is $43 ish per gram and if you do 14K gold that's probably 4 grams or $172 and that's just cost?

I wonder if you could just find an existing design and have them use your diamonds instead? Like something like this: https://www.shaneco.com/wedding-bands/marquise-diamond-wedding-band-in-14k-white-gold/p/41082958

You're ring is beautiful! What does the crown look like from the side? I wonder if something like this would work:
