Custom order Etsy problem, help!

Michelle, on December 22, 2019 at 3:52 PM Posted in Wedding Attire 0 21

So I've been working with someone on Etsy in Thailand to make my cultural dress. They made an entire mock up and everything from the materials I picked out from images shown. They completed the dress and showed it to me and I jumped the gun out of excitement to tell them I loved it and they said they will ship tomorrow morning.
As I looked at it closely, I realized the color wasn't exactly the one as I picked out and wondered why it looked different. Turns out the skirt was very similar but different pattern, different color slightly, etc. So now I'm sad that they didn't make it with the pattern I chose.

The color has more of a green tint and some black, it's more angular pattern than a floral pattern. I have no idea why they just picked a similar skirt and didn't tell me. At first glance it looked the same but I felt something was odd and I did a comparison. I messaged them asking about and I'm really hoping they see my message before sending it.

Do I have a case if the seller decides to not respect my request? They say in the listing the style is exactly as shown but the clothing they made isn't the same style... see photo below.

Left is my pick and mock up, and the second is the final.

It’s worth trying to open a case with Etsy, but they sent you a photo of the completed garment and you approved it, so I’m not sure what your chances of success are.

I’m just upset that the pattern is different than what was designed. I guess I will wear it but it really bothers me moreso that the colors are off. 😞

I would email the seller first because they may rectify in order to avoid a bad review. I had an issue with a custom made proposal box and I emailed the seller and she sent me a new one at no charge.

Possibly because they only have two good reviews and seem to be new in the game. I just want the skirt I picked is all. I feel if they had communicated to me the difference I wouldn’t be this upset knowing they just used a different one. I’m just crossing my fingers they see my message before shipping it tomorrow.

Is your wedding close? Worse case scenario if they ship can you return with time to get the new one? I am sorry it did not go as you planned and hope it is rectified.

I guess what I really should’ve titled the headline to ask for peoples’ experience such as yourself with customized orders and it not being exactly the same

Thanks. I will. Just gives me a bit of anxiety but maybe that’s my bridezilla coming out. I actually posted this question on reddit on the Etsy category and someone was actually insulting me and accused me of attacking the seller because they were nearly identical. Keyword is nearly.

I would say that you should have a back up plan in case she cannot get it exactly. That can happen. There are times that I show my nail tech a design and sometimes she gets it spot on and sometimes not exactly. Can you buy the original in your picture?

I would still wear it...since it’s only what I’ll be wearing for a couple hours during reception. I actually was okay with it until I realized it wasn’t the same design I chose. It’s possible I could buy the original skirt, no idea. I don’t think they actually make the design but purchase the materials and put the dress together and tailor it. We will see. Thank you for talking this through, it helps ease my mind when there’s some support.

We just got our custom guest book from Etsy. The quality was excellent but the cover wasn’t the design we had agreed upon (it was a different sample the seller had sent me). I was nervous about asking her to redo the whole thing, so I just messaged her and told her it wasn’t the right cover and then she offered to remake the entire book for free. I definitely think it’s worth pursuing, but as PP said, since you did say yes to the design there’s a chance they won’t redo it. However, since they probably don’t want a bad review, chances are they will. Good luck!

Did the seller give a reason why? I wonder why they don’t make the design exactly in the first place. Thanks for sharing.

It was possibly a language barrier since she lives in Lithuania. I think she misunderstood when I said I wanted her to go with the original design (the one she had sent me first) rather than another one she had sent me later.

So they explained to me why it was different and offered another skirt but that skirt was closest to what they found. So I decided to keep it.

    Sorry see quote below.
In Thai fabric market, they produce the fabric as lot and sometimes it is difficult to find identically design if it run out from previous season since we need a raw material to do custom made.

Apparently this is the closest new design they provide in the market, the pattern might be a little bit different but it is very new and unique!

Those photos are EXTREMELY similar. Accurate color is extremely hard to reproduce in photos (hence why bridesmaids dress companies offer swatches for colors), and the very slight differences in color could easily be just lighting or white balance here. Unless both photos were taken in exact studio conditions with the same camera, lens, and software algorithms and are being viewed on a calibrated monitor, there is no way to know if the two sample photos shown accurately reflects differences in the fabric, especially contrast and color. The pattern embellishment/trim is noticeably different, but not by much. Sometimes fabrics are discontinued and it's possible the materials used on the original garment are no longer available.

Overall, if you've already approved the proofs I'm not sure you can go back and do much about it now. If the item has already shipped, I would recommend waiting and seeing what the product you get actually looks like. You may love it in person and be pleasantly surprised! If you are unhappy with it, it's worth reaching out to the seller, but because you approved the proofs, if the item doesn't have any other defects when you receive it, I'm unsure if you have a case for return or a PayPal dispute.

They didn’t ship it yet and explained to me about the fabric market. They didn’t have anything else as close...so I told them to proceed to shop. I just really hope it looks good on me in person. It’s very difficult to find a skirt I like without actually going to Thailand myself lol. I have my aunt but I go through my cousin to her and it’s a hassle and work for her so I want to avoid it. Oh well...as long as it looks good on me and fiancé thinks I look great is what I most for. It’s only for an hour and half I plan to wear this anyway....

I do think it looks beautiful and I'm sure you'll look amazing in it! The color probably won't look exactly the same as is does on screen anyway, but if you aren't trying to match it to anything I doubt you will notice.
