Custom e-ring looks awful, help!

Mr & Mrs. Freedlund, on April 28, 2017 at 5:22 PM Posted in Wedding Attire 0 30

Hi ladies,

My fiance inherited his grandmas OEC diamond so we decided to create a setting. I spoke with a sales lady at a very popular engagement ring store of exactly what I wanted and she raved about one of their guys that he is amazing at what he does. I asked if they can custom make the Tiffany style 6 prong solitaire and they said yes. I asked for claw prongs as thin as possible without compromising its durability. I provided 2 photos of what I wanted. When I approved the wax it was bulky but the lady said once its in Platinum it will be tweaked the way I asked.

When the ring was finished I noticed right away its flaws. It looked like they attempted to make it with no success, it was a terrible imitation. I contacted the lady to express my concern and that I didnt love the setting they made. She apologized and said for me to visit the shop so she can help make it right. Is this service on them or would they charge me again? We paid $475 for the labor the first time.

Left side Claw dainty prongs. Right side Claw-ish bulky prongs

The first diamond is the inspiration and the second is the custom done by the store?

I don't see anything wrong with the ring. I think it's absolutely perfect. How special.

I'm sorry; I'd be disappointed, too. I would assume the service charge would be on them considering they didn't get it right the first time.

The left side is the look I wanted. The right side is what they made. What they made is overpowering the diamond. The first thing I notice are the thick prongs.

Is it because the diamond is smaller? Maybe they had to make them thicker to hold that size in. It doesn't look that bad from the top.

Maybe I'm missing something, but if you wanted something this simple, that presumably every jewelry store on earth carries, why would you even bother getting this custom made? All you had to do was go pick out the setting.

Not at all insinuating this is your fault, but this is not the route I would've gone for a solitaire ring. I too would be disappointed though if I had something custom made and it didn't come out how I wanted.

It doesn't look horrible but it's definitely not the same. I'd go back and see what they can do

The diamond is a 1.20 ct. I've seen 1 ct in daintier prongs than this. Its overbearing on the diamond instead of enhancing it. We have our receipt of the service we paid for and we paid a $150 Peace of Mind Service Promise of up to $2,500 which I forgot what that meant. When I go to see her I'll find out but I don't know what my rights as a customer are so I wanted to be prepared for whats to come.

They didn't have the Tiffany style in claw prongs. The diamond is an Old European Cut so it's deeper in size and wouldn't fit a regular diamond setting.

Is it possible that its a harder ring to make... which is why Tiffany makes it and why its so expensive? Just a thought

I don't think it looks awful, but it's not exactly like your inspiration picture. A good jeweler should be willing to work with you to get what you want.

Sorry I don't have any advice but I wouldn't sit and settle for it. It does look like a half assed knockoff of your inspo pic. I'm sorry :'( I hope someone can make it right!

I don't think it looks HORRIBLE from the top but the side view is definitely different...

See what they will do for you. Be nice to them but don't give them another dime.

Honestly it looks the same to me... But they won't charge you to make it more to your liking.

    Call them and ask?

I would assume that they wouldn't charge you for it, but it never hurts to just call. I definitely do see the difference between the inspo and final product.

I don't think the thickness of the prongs is the issue. It just doesn't look well made overall. The transition between the prongs and the band isn't very...smooth. It just doesn't look done to me.

I would ask them to try again. If you paid extra for a guarantee, they should honor it.

They should fix it, especially since you mentioned it wasn't right and pointed out what was wrong with the wax cast
