Cupcakes instead of cake

Mrs. Lav, on January 29, 2015 at 12:04 PM Posted in Planning 0 33

I'm sure this topic has been done to death, but I'm finally warming up to the idea of cupcakes instead of cake. I like the opportunity for a variety of flavors, and I've found some cute fall-themed toppers (mostly edible leaves, although I realize they'd be mainly for decorations) on Etsy.

I have a few questions for those of you who have used cupcakes:

- is this an outdated idea? I know it was super popular 3-4 years ago.

- how was it received?

- is this option really cheaper than regular cake? I wouldn't be asking for a fancy design on them-- maybe just for sugar leaves. Obviously, a baker might not want to use something from Etsy and I know that this could get expensive. Could I get around it by asking my venue staff to place them on tops (a little shady, but a possibility)?

FYI: We'd still want a cake on top for cutting/to use a cute cake topper.

(edited for grammar)

I am going to do a cake bar with mini cupcakes, frosting shots and cake truffles. we would also have a 6" cutting cake which ranges from $35-$75 depending on decorations.

for 100 mini cupcake, 50 frosting shots and 50 cake truffles it came out to be $380 which was less than what i thought it would. Depends on the bakery though.

Also my FSIL is also apparently doing Cupcakes for her wedding which is before us at the end of june

I love the idea. You're guest won't care at all as long as the cupcakes are good. Its just free food for them!

We are thinking about cupcakes as well. It just seems easier overall than cutting a large cake or large sheet cake in the back of the kitchen. We are also included a sweets bar, so people will have the option. We are thinking about 85 cupcakes, a 6inch round to cut into and then the other sweets.

We chose cupcakes because our venue charges a $3pp plating fee for wedding cakes, and no fee for cupcakes, and we chose 5 flavors of cupcake, in both mini and large sizes. I couldn't justify spending $300 on plating a cake!

We are doing cupcakes in three different flavors, and a small cake for cutting. The price largely depends on where you get them and the flavors you select. Our bakery had some other gourmet/seasonal options that cost extra. It could end up being more expensive than a traditional cake depending on your choices.

And can cake ever be outdated, no matter what form it comes in? I think not! :o)

We have a great bakery here where, if you buy lots of cupcakes, they cost less that $2 each. Where do you get the cupcake stands? I got a cardboard one to hold 36 cupcakes for a party but it fell apart. I love the idea of cupcakes.

We're doing cupcakes as well. IMO, it's much easier to serve, our guests will have variety, and plus i'm thinking it's easier to get rid of leftover cupcakes then it is for large pieces of cake. We're buyinh ours from either Costco or Sam's Club. Both places have great cakes and cupcakes and they are reasonably priced for the size cupcake you get. I've used them for showers in past. Plus we will have a candy bar so that should be enough sweets for our guests.

Awesome. Texted FH and he loves the idea. However, I'm going to add it to the list of things my mom won't like (remember that post from last week?).

How many flavors are you guys having? What does Sams/Costco offer in terms of flavors?

I have absolutely no helpful words of advice to offer, except to say DO IT! If I were at your wedding, I'd love it Smiley smile For some reason, I like cupcakes, I don't like cake... strange, I know.

We're doing cupcakes as well. Red velvet with cream cheese icing, vanilla oreo (There's a golden oreo at the bottom of the cupcake) and key lime (for those that are feeling a little more adventurist). We wanted to have a chocolate and vanilla option for guests since we know some people don't like to stray too much from those flavors. We're super excited for our cupcakes! DO IT!

We are doing cup cakes! Well sort of, they are individual square pieces of cake.

We're doing a 6" cake with a basic butter-cream outside. Similar to this pic (bottom part only)

Then 6 dozen premium flavoured cupcakes. Each dozen will be a different flavour. No fancy toppers or anything, just how they usually make them. (it's a local bakery)

We're also going to get a pastry and squares platter from our caterer. The grand total with delivery will be $345.

    ETA: Flavours

    Cake- Cookies and cream

Cupcakes- Black & white, Chocolate salted caramel, Cherry chip, Maple bacon, Coffee crisp, Sticky toffee

I am doing cupcakes- easy to serve, no need to cut, and can be made in a variety of flavors. My MOH actually has a business doing cupcakes for events and she is constantly busy!

I'm all for cupcakes. They are overdone in our particular circle, so we are doing a cake instead, but in general, I really like the idea. And yes, in most cases, they would be cheaper. You would probably be looking at $3-$3.50 max per cupcake as opposed to $5-$6 per cake serving.

I am most likely doing cupcakes from Sam's club with their non dairy frosting(it's kinda like cool whip but soo much better, stiffer and it holds up) for the cakes there it was around the same price per serving to do cupcakes as it is to do a sheet cake. Cupcakes are easier to store later lol and easy for guests to take extra home with them.

@Randee, that was my FH's thought as well! He got really excited that people could take them home and "feel like a part of the wedding," whatever that means. (We're providing edible favors-- apple cider donuts-- as well.)

Whatever, he actually had an opinion this, so I'll give it to him. Smiley smile

We are doing cakeballs. A local baker makes these as a specialty item and no one can replicate them. Also, they can be picked up the night before and easily transported to the venue. We will also serve Wick's Pies - the state pie of Indiana.
