I'm sure this topic has been done to death, but I'm finally warming up to the idea of cupcakes instead of cake. I like the opportunity for a variety of flavors, and I've found some cute fall-themed toppers (mostly edible leaves, although I realize they'd be mainly for decorations) on Etsy.

I have a few questions for those of you who have used cupcakes:

- is this an outdated idea? I know it was super popular 3-4 years ago.

- how was it received?

- is this option really cheaper than regular cake? I wouldn't be asking for a fancy design on them-- maybe just for sugar leaves. Obviously, a baker might not want to use something from Etsy and I know that this could get expensive. Could I get around it by asking my venue staff to place them on tops (a little shady, but a possibility)?

FYI: We'd still want a cake on top for cutting/to use a cute cake topper.

We had a cupcake tower, with three flavors, chocolate raspberry, key lime and butter rum. It was beautiful and delicious. We got them from a bakery, which probably cost more than Sam's Club/Costco, but they were delivered and set up, and the quality of the cake and icing was amazing.

@Karen-- how many cupcakes? I'll probably need about 120. I've been looking at cupcake stands and they're kind of pricey. Where id you get yours? (Also, love the fall leaves-- that's similar to what I'd want.)

    And yay for anniversary twins!

I have budgeting for atleast 1.5 cupcakes for a guest. Lol I love cake and most if my guests also do. The only way I can afford this is going with Sam's club which they have 30 cupcakes for 14.99 for the price they are mighty yummy.

I THOUGHT cupcakes were cheaper, until I got a quote. I was quoted $330 for cupcakes (not including the stand) and $300 for the cake, which does not need a stand. Luckily for us, our venue doesn't have a cake cutting fee- super yay!! So, no worries on that.....

I also think cupcakes have been overly "trendy" thanks to Pinterest, another reason why I decided against it. Plus I want a traditional "cake cutting" ceremony, and that's kind of hard to do with cupcakes...

Plus, I'm sure you won't be able to have THAT much different flavors, as I'm sure each flavor might be added cost???? (well if you want to pay you can do it), Usually with tiered cakes, they can do a different cake for each tier anyway....

just not a fan of cupcakes, it seems very teen birthday party to me....

@Randee, what kinds of flavors are you getting? FH was most excited about the variety of flavors.

Thanks, @Julie. I requested a couple of quotes and I'm waiting back. I'm worried that they'll be more expensive.

Except...apparently FH cares about this (now that I brought it up). So, we may need to go with it regardless.

Sam's only had white and chocolate. A lot if other store bakeries around though charge $1/cupcake and they offer several flavors. Or variety will be in the frosting color.

120 cupcakes, plus the cake on top including delivery almost 35 miles away, and set up cost us about $450. We invited 115, but ended up with 88 guests. We ordered entirely too many. They were amazing though, and we ordered the boxes in the first shot from Oriental Trading and a bunch of people brought them back to the hotel.

We had cupcakes in our candy buffet, a good cupcake place with multiple flavors and options is going to charge $3+ per cupcake and chances are guests will have more than one. That to me is almost the same price as most cakes...unless you live somewhere like NYC. So it may not be less expensive for you

My personal feelings: I LOVE cupcakes. I could eat cupcakes every day. But you only get one wedding cake in your life, so I personally always vote for that.
