Cupcake pricing

MissToMrs.S, on April 10, 2016 at 1:16 PM Posted in Planning 0 16

Instead of doing a trad wedding cake we wanted to do cupcakes so we can offer our guest a few flavors. I had one vendor email me back and I'm not sure if her pricing is normal or steep it was "18-20 a dozen for basic cupcakes" those were her words to me a basic cupcake is vanilla or chocolate with plain buttercream icing. Are those prices normal for basic cupcakes?

We're doing cupcakes too, and I think we're paying $2.50 a piece. It should end up being about the same as the cost per serving as an actual cake.

That seems to be on the lower end. The quote we got from a decent place (they were on cupcake wars but didn't win) was $2.75/cupcake. So roughly $35/dozen but that includes several design options and flavors options as well as gluten or sugar free at no charge.

We are doing cupcake favors and they are $2/each. We are getting an assortment of flavors and icing - basically the same flavors as our cake tiers.

That seems pretty reasonable. You would probably need to get clarification on what "basic" means to them, but I'm guessing it means standard decorations and no filling or unusual flavors.

Yes it is normal. It was the same price for me to do a cake as it is cupcakes. But...cupcakes still save me money bc I don't have to hire a staff member to cut & serve the cake.

On the same subject of cupcakes what's the rule of thumb for how many to get we're looking at about 90 people

I've seen it range from $1.50-$3 each so that seems reasonable.

Our cupcakes are 2.00 per cupcake. And they will be specialty cupcakes. I think some of it will be the area you live in. We live pretty rural, so it may not be as expensive as some.

That's pretty normal. Cupcakes are time consuming to decorate.

We are also doing cupcakes and are paying $2.50 and $3.00 a cupcake depending on the flavor.

My friend is a baker and will be $25 a dozen or 2 dozen mini sized cupcakes and I was pleased with that price.

Around here, $3 is standard for really good cupcakes. We are having 3 different flavors for our wedding cake (each tier will be different) and it works out to about $3 per person.

@Angel you treat each one as a serving. So if you're only having 90 guests, I'd say get 100 cupcakes. We're having 150 guests, we're having a small tiered cake that serves 20, 80 cupcakes, and 2 9x13 cobblers. The bakery said that should be plenty. Take into account if you're having a groom's cake when you're figuring out dessert servings.
