Cue that the wedding has ended?

Michelle, on January 12, 2021 at 3:29 PM Posted in Wedding Reception 0 9
Traditionally it used to be the cutting of the cake if there was no formal send off (birdseed, petals, bubbles, etc). Those are still true for older generations (40s and older) who are used to those being the end of the wedding with nothing after, but they have since become photo ops instead with much more party following.

As a guest, do you stay to the very end when staff starts cleaning up or do you use one of the above events as a sign the party is over? Or something else entirely?

We usually stay until the DJ announces the last song of the night, and we dance to that...then we leave.

If it's a family member's wedding and I'm extremely close to them, or they're immediate family, then I stay till after all that is done and help them pack up and leave the venue if they need any help! The same goes for a wedding that I'm part of the bridal party of. If I'm a member of the wedding party, I stay behind to help the family/couple with anything they need as far as packing up and cleaning and getting ready to leave.

The DJ or entertainer should be announcing the last song or performance

I agree with this. As a normal guest, my cue to leave is when the DJ stops. Unless I’m not having a good time, then I’ll leave after all the main reception events.

I've never used cake cutting as the cue to leave, but I've also never been to a "cake and punch" wedding (in the day time, short reception). I've also never been to a wedding with a photo opp "send off", but I think I would be really confused if there was a big deal about a send off and then no one left.

When I leave totally depends on how I am feeling, how many people I know at the wedding, how well I know the happy couple, how far I have to travel to get home, etc. So, there's no one cue for me.

I think the simplest way to signify the end of the wedding is to have the DJ announce last dance.

To be completely honest, it depends for me on the wedding. I am an early bird so I tire around 10/10:30pm. If I can’t pull myself from the dance floor, I will stay until the point where staff are cleaning up and I have to go. Otherwise, depending on how tired I am, I will stay until the cake is cut or whatever point at which it is clear that the formalities of the evening are over.

We generally stay to the last song - but we also live in an area where you really don't go to weddings unless you are close to the couple.

Frequently, this is then followed by grabbing more food (I'm always hungry), or just chatting with friends until our subway stop.

Most know it time to wrap up when last call is announced by the bar/DJ/MC. Last call from the bar is always a sign or if I just can't handle sitting anymore (have a chronic pain condition and it can flare).

Well it won’t be the cutting of the cake for us, I want everyone enjoy that cake!
Mostly I’ve noticed the dj announce a last dance.
Also venue staff are good at hinting by clearing up dishes, that sort of thing, if people are lingering too long. And the bartender will prob stop serving.

Our dj will have to announce it because I'm certain all of our drunk guests will stay there all night, otherwise lol.
