Cruise Wedding Plans Sinking....

Cruise Wedding Plans Sinking.... 1
I had originally decided early into our engagement to go with a cruise wedding and quickly booked an embarkation wedding with Carnival Breeze for November 2020. I paid for the cruise then I paid for the classic gold wedding package (all in at this point $5,000). After I booked everything on January 2020, I felt such a wave of relief that everything would be taken care of and I would have nothing to worry about for my small intimate ceremony. Clearly my hindsight was not 2020 and now I am freaking out. I don't know if I should contact Carnival or wait till it gets closer to date. Do I need to look for a second wedding venue option and get one booked now? Honestly I am completely at a lost and so discouraged like so many brides out there and I just need some insight. The most important thing is getting married November 15th, 2020 and my family and friends being safe. But we all live in TN and the wedding was scheduled to be in Fort Lauderdale, Florida so I can't wait till last minute to let my guests know the plans. Every time they ask me the plans or call asking me for an update I just feel such a crushing ball of anxiety. I don't want to lose the money if I cancel but I also don't want to end up with a wedding dress and nowhere to go when November 15th rolls around.

Do you know if they offer a refund or partial refund? I would wait until the end of August and maybe early September to make a final decision. If you're planning for a smaller ceremony, you probably could find a backup venue that would allow an "elopement" type ceremony. At this point it's so tough to make decisions because everything is so uncertain. I'm sorry you're feeling all stressed out and anxious. You are not alone!

U could wait and see how it goes but from what im hearing cruises arent gonna be a thing for a long time. personally i would look for another venue. i know thats upsetting but i wouldnt wait until september to see if you can do it and then scramble to find another place. on the bright side there a lot of dates open this year and venues want money. im fairly certain u can get ur full refund since a few people i know were refunded in full for their cruises coming up. hope this helps!

It wouldn't hurt to start reaching out to Carnival to try to get more info on their refund policies due to COVID and also to maybe reach out to other venues to ask them if they're willing to put a soft hold on a date for you just in case. You still have some time before you need to make a decision, but this way, you would at least have a backup plan started in case the cruise doesn't work out.

We have a relative who got "trapped" on a cruise in the very early days of the pandemic. Their 14 day cruise turned into 30 days stuck on a ship because no ports/countries would let them dock/disembark. It cost them roughly an additional $25,000 in order to eventually get home, where they were then in govt supervised quarantined for 14 days.... They are frequent international travelers and this cruise was at least their twelfth; it turned into a real-life nightmare where they were truly worried whether they would be able to get home before borders closed for months. I would just go ahead with a plan B, if I were you.

Unfortunately this situation has so many unknowns that there is no telling what it will be like come November. Florida is one of the hot spots right now for the virus so I would definitely avoid that area. I believe cruises have been pretty much been put on hold for now so I would definitely consider a back up plan. It would probably be best to plan something local rather than traveling especially to an area like Florida. I'm so sorry this is happening.

Hi Ana! I would definitely reach out to Carnival. I’m so sorry this is happening to you and I can hear the disappointment in your message about your wedding plans being altered Smiley sad. We booked a honeymoon cruise in October 2020 through a different cruise line and our travel agent informed us that the cruise probably will cancel our trip. We also have the choice of moving the dates or getting. 125% refund! So call and check, it definitely won’t hurt!

I would reach out to Carnival and see what the options are. I have my doubts thee will be any cruises at least for 2020 unfortunately. And Florida is also not looking too good at the moment.

I would start making a plan B. I think at this point its with 100% certainty that a cruise in 2020 is not going to happen. I would start planning for a local wedding in TN for your November date. I would avoid planning anything that involves travel.

In my original post, I forgot to mention that there has never been a single case of Covid-19 associated with our relatives' cruise.... They set sail on March 1, when the only known cases were in Asia and there were no general travel advisories or warnings.... Despite that, multiple countries, including the US, still refused to let them dock/disembark passengers -- they were literally trapped, sailing from country to country (and continent to continent...), and once the initial scheduled 14-day cruise ended, the remaining 16+ days included nothing more than basic food, services, etc. The crew did their best in a terrible situation, but there wasn't much they could do with limited supplies, staffing, and options. (They've now been home for about 12 weeks and all their claims for refunds/expense reimbursements via insurance, airlines [multiple cancelled flights], and the cruise line have been denied. They are just out the additional $25,000 [beyond what they originally paid for the cruise/trip]. And, they lost an additional six-weeks of income when they couldn't work because they were stuck on the ship and/or in govt mandated quarantines.)

Like others have said, I'd make other plans for your wedding. Good luck. Smiley heart

Like others have said, a cruise most likely will not happen this year. I’d suggest looking into getting your money back and finding a new venue.
I know it’s the total opposite of what you had planned, but what about a mountain wedding? There are some really beautiful all-inclusive venues in Pigeon Forge and Gatlinburg that are perfect for elopements and small weddings.
I’m sorry you are having to deal with this, but go ahead and see what your options are and give yourself the chance to get excited about a new plan. Good luck!

Carnival has been really good about keeping their passengers informed about cancelled cruises. I’ve been keeping an eye on the site myself since our honeymoon is supposed to be the 22nd-29th of November out of Baltimore.
If you are still worried, just call and talk to them.
We will have our November weddings. Send all the positive thoughts out into the universe and think it into reality ❤️

FH and I (and a few other couples) were supposed to take a cruise in March. But the pandemic struck and we canceled. However, Carnival was very understanding and refunded the majority of our money, while using the remaining portion as a deposit for a future sailing in December. In March, we thought life would be better by then. But now, we will most likely skip it and lose out on that money if we have to (it was only about $200)

We enjoy cruises, so our honeymoon plan was going to consist of a one-week cruise followed by one week in Jamaica. But with everything going on, we didn’t rush to make any moves booking anything. We’ve since postponed our October wedding to October 2021, so we’ll figure out new honeymoon plans next year. I do hope that everything works out in your favor. But it would be wise to have a back up plan.

Hugs to you, I know how awful it is. Reach out to carnival now, after you read any agreements or contracts that you signed. See what cancellation refund policies they have in writing first. Go ahead and come up with a back up plan now, and wait until August to pull the trigger on anything.

I wanted to take the time to thank every single one of you for your responses, advice, and support. It meant a lot to me. I don't know if it is because I finally put my questions and insecurities out into the universe but I received word from carnival today that it would be cancelled. So now I have to come up with a plan B and try to get over my vision of a cruise wedding. Cruise Wedding Plans Sinking.... 2

Wait, so They were forced to say on the cruise for an extra two weeks because of the global pandemic and they were charged an extra $25,000 for that?? I really don't see how that's legal!! That is totally insane!! I'm so sorry to hear that!! I don't know what the hell I would do in that situation, because there's no way I could afford $25,000 because I was forced to stay on a cruise ship for two weeks longer than planned!! Glad that they got home and everything worked out!! But that is just craziness!!

No, they weren't charged to stay stuck on the ship -- that was "free" (although, they were charged for additional fee-for-service items, like beverages, laundry, internet, etc. during the 16 additional days, which were all included in the cost of their original 14-day package); the extra charges were mostly for the multiple last minute international plane tickets they had to buy -- at least three different sets, beyond their original tickets. When they booked the cruise they were supposed to fly home from New Zealand to their home in Australia. When they weren't allowed to dock in NZ, those nonrefundable tickets went to waste. Then, during the 16 additional days, they were initially told they would be able to disembark first, in Tahiti or Bali, then in Honolulu, and then finally in San Diego. Within 36 hours of approaching each of those ports with the expectation of being able to disembark, they were required by the port countries to have plane tickets that would get them out of that city/country within 12 hours of disembarking (no country wanted them "hanging around contaminating people"). So, at the last minute, they first bought a set of tickets from Tahiti to their home in Australia; when they weren't allowed to dock/disembark there, those tickets were no good. Then, they were told they would be allowed to dock/disembark in Hilo, then that was changed to Honolulu, but again, they had to have paid for tickets in hand. At the last minute (it was super political), Honolulu wouldn't let the ship disembark any passengers except HI residents.... And those VERY expensive, last minute tickets also went to waste. Finally, with no guarantees, the ship headed to San Diego, and they were again told a condition of disembarking was to have tickets out of So Cal within 12 hours of disembarking -- if the ship was allowed to dock -- a HUGE "if" at that time (by then they'd been sailing across and around the Pacific for more than 2 weeks with no country willing to let passengers off the ship. They were finally given clearance to dock/disembark in San Diego, and had less than 6 hours to make it to the last flight from the US to AU.... Those tickets alone were well over $15,000 (basically same-day international tickets, the LAST seats on the LAST flight -- they didn't know for how long at the time; but US Customs wouldn't let them off the ship unless they could guarantee they'd be out of the country within 12 hours. Good thing they made it, as it turned out the be the last flight between the US & AU for months...). So, in total, they lost the cost of three sets of tickets they couldn't use (all non-refundable by the airlines' interpretations of their rules) and the one phenomenally expensive set of tickets they used to get home and a wide-variety of "incidental expenses" like mandatory supervised transportation between the port in San Diego and LAX, etc. Luckily, they have credit cards with high limits, but they will be paying them off for a good long while. If it sounds unbelievable, Google "Holland America Maasdam cruise March 2020"; for example, https://www.usnews.com/news/best-states/hawaii/articles/2020-03-18/2-cruise-ships-turned-away-by-other-ports-head-to-honolulu). Honestly, they were lucky compared to at least two other Holland America ships that floated around practically forever -- with many Covid-19 infected passengers.... Travel insurance hasn't covered a thing, the airlines won't even give them credit for the unused flights, and so far no help from the cruise line.... I saw that the OP just got word her planned cruise is officially cancelled. Based on our family's experience, that's probably a huge blessing in disguise! Smiley heart
