covid & May weddings

Ashley, on April 21, 2020 at 11:33 PM Posted in Community Conversations 0 16
Hi, everyone! My wedding is supposed to be May 30th and I’m torn on what to do...reschedule, wait it out? I haven’t sent out invites yet but that’s something that would need to be done soon (like this week) if we plan to keep our date. What do you all think? How is everyone else handling this?

I'm June 12th and still holding out hope. Just sent out invitations with a little insert saying we understand that covid 19 could influence people's decision to come and that we will keep in touch with everyone in case we need to postpone. We haven't come up with a super solid plan b yet but I'm so ready to be married already, I really hope we don't have to postpone. I think a lot of it depends on where you are, where your guest are coming from and where your ceremony is with different parts of the country having different rules and restrictions because of the virus

What state are you in? Do they have strict restrictions? Are there a lot of cases?

WI bride here - 285 guests invited for 5/23/20 (postponed) Just to give you an idea of my situation as well...
A lot of things play factors in deciding to postpone, but remember that it is just a date. Choosing to postpone will not affect your guests negatively, but deciding to go on with May 30th might. Regardless, what matters the most is the love between the two of you and the ability to share your love with the people who matter most. COVID cannot steal that, so why let it have a chance at stealing the health of you and your loved ones? That was what set my mind at ease and I felt a huge weight lifted off of my shoulders once we made the decision to postpone from 5/23/20 until 4/24/21. We are getting married today 4/24/20 and renewing our vows/celebrating with family next year. I wish you the strength to overcome the fear and doubt in making that decision and best of luck! We are all in this together ❤

I would see what your state has in place in the upcoming weeks. I'm here in Virginia and our Stay at Home is holding steady to June 10th, 2020. We postponed our June 27th wedding to December 12th, 2020 as it was too close for us to all this madness. It really put our minds at ease to postpone, like as soon as everything was reconfirmed I physically sighed so hard and it felt so good. Good luck with your decision and what y'all decide to do.

    Hi Ashley,

I'm sorry that you're dealing with this decision ~six weeks before your wedding. Have you contacted your venue? What are they recommending? Are you able to postpone to a new date later this year or early 2021?

The PP from Wendy and Amanda are great because both mentioned that postponing has "eased their minds." If postponing would relieve your stress and/or anxiety, then maybe that's the best way to go. It's a personal decision, of course.

Here's a couple of other discussions with couples who are planning/postponing May weddings:

May brides and your plan of action?

May 30th wedding - when do you postpone?

I hope your venue can work with you on a solution that feels right for YOU. Smiley heart

I love your idea of using a little insert. We've been pushing back sending out our invites as long as we can but we need to do it ASAP at this point. I'm going to use that! Thanks Smiley smile

NC. Our governor just released a statement yesterday about his plan to open things back up in phases over the next several weeks. That made me feel a bit better, especially since we are more than happy to just have family instead of the large guest list that had accumulated.

I absolutely love your mindset about this! I cried and cried the other day, feeling super stressed out and overwhelmed but I decided that feeling upset would not make anything better. I had two options: have a smaller, more intimate wedding (which is what i originally wanted anyway) or postpone. I decided to see it as a blessing in disguise - this whole thing is allowing me to take a step back and focus on what matters the most. Congrats, by the way! Smiley smile

I'm in NC! It seems that our governor is wanting to phase out our restrictions over the next few weeks. Luckily my venue and all other vendors have been super understanding.

Ultimately our venue is leaving the decision up to us. We can reschedule or downsize to a smaller ceremony. I think since our state is now phasing out the restrictions over the next several weeks, a smaller ceremony is our first option. Of course, checking with all vendors again (since the statement about the upcoming phasing was just released yesterday) is a must before anything is decided for sure. Thank you for recommending those other discussions. I will definitely look into them! Smiley smile

Glad I could help! I saw the idea in a forum a while back (I don't remember which one) and thought it was a great idea. I also feel relief that our invitations are mailed out, I was starting to feel like it was looming over my head. I really hope everything works out for you!

That's great news!! Our wedding is taking place about an hour outside of Raleigh so it's good to know NC is starting to lighten their restrictions. We were all traveling from out of state so even if NC was ok, guests (and wedding party members) might of had a difficult time getting to the wedding.
