Could use some advice or reassurance on my decision to cancel reception due to covid "long post"

Taylor, on June 30, 2020 at 7:34 AM Posted in Wedding Reception 0 19

I am in Ohio, we are allowed to have dancing with distance and up to 300 guests with distance 10 at a table 6ft apart. Currently, guests must stay seated while eating or drinking but that will probably be lifted as well. After a lot of soul searching, I am pretty sure I will have my ceremony and a small gathering at my house with 10-15 people and forego the reception. My wedding was never going to be your traditional wedding that a lot of brides dream of. No bridesmaids or groomsmen, no bachelor, or bachelorette parties. Just me my FH and my doggie, who to make things worse has been diagnosed with deadly cancer with only a year or so to live, which is why postponing is not an option for me. More than anything it is important she is there.

Initially, I only wanted about 35 people, but with required minimums is how I ended up landing on an original guest list of 103. The main reason I am considering canceling the reception is that out of the 67 on our guest list only 6 yes 6, (I am an old soul I am in my early 20s lol) are over 50. I just picture everyone sitting there eating then leaving at 8pm or not coming at all. Being boring. I guess if I had a lot of friends my age in their 20s that are attending then maybe I would be thinking differently. Plus I don't want those older guests to put themselves at risk either. Additionally, another factor in my decision. My mom would lose money in deposits about 4,000 doing this and she is okay with it because then she doesn't have to spend an additional 6,000 dollars. I am so afraid to make the wrong decision cancel and regret go forward and regret. This all just stinks !

I would cancel or postpone the reception. I live in Kentucky and work in Ohio and with the way cases in Ohio are raising, I can see DeWine following suit with Florida and Texas and reinforcing some of the restrictions. Even if you're allowed to have your event, it may be too risky if you have many elderly guests.

Hi, I’m in Ohio. They changed that law. We can congegate at a distance. They were really hush hush about it so they never announced thchange b you can google the document on the website! I’ll try to find the link for you. I don’t have many over 60 except my parents and fiancé’s stepdad, I plan to cut down the list and seat families together.

Also, talk to your venue about add-ones and upgrades to make up for the difference in pay. I asked my venue if I don’t meet the 125 guest minimum in the contract, can I upgrade services, food, add on extras, etc. They said they will work with me on that. I’ll be probably inviting 60-80?

Oh wow sorry! I miseread the 6 yes RSVP! The bright side, at least you do not have to worry about their health and safety. Knowing that you’ve tried and this was out of control, hopefully that can give you a peace of mind you did what you could and the main important thing is you will marry your love and celebrate later. Any celebration, no matter how small, I’m sure would be joyous.

Hi Michelle! I ended up making the decision to have my ceremony which will be at a beautiful estate. After I am going to have a small gathering at my house. Post phoning is not an option because I have a sick family member that may not be here next year. There is too much uncertainty. Plus my wedding was not like most of the brides on this side with bridal parties and a ton of friends coming. I feel at peace with the decision. I started out wanting it small and it only got bigger because of the venue's requirement for min. All my vendors were great, the venue was even removing the cap of money that had to be spent. But at the end of the day my mom is going to give me what she would have spent on the reception as a gift so that is a huge bonus to help us out. Oh, and I moved my wedding date from 10/31/20 to 10/17/20 so kinda excited about that lol Smiley smile

I think that sounds like a great plan Taylor! Especially since you had originally wanted a smaller celebration!

That's also amazing that all of your vendors were so flexible and helpful! Smiley heart Lots of new things to be excited about!

Yes! Remember Dewine is going to make new announcements for everything tomorrow at his 2pm news conf. I will be praying for you that he can lift the sitting when eating and drinking. I hope we can keep in touch after our weddings Smiley smile

We will see! Yes, it's nice to have someone to talk to about wedding stuff particularly in the same hometown. I'm sure my bridesmaids don't care to talk about wedding stuff too often lol which is why I'm on here so much!!

I read this morning the order will be extended indefinitely. The end date will state something like when he decides the emergency is over. Looks like moving towards mandatory masks too. UGH!

I’ve seen states require masks in public when social distancing is not possible. I’m wondering if that would be an exception for a wedding if social distancing is enforced already.

I would hope so; If not I am going to refuse to wear one when I am saying my vows lol. If they can let people riot they can let us have our wedding's without masks Smiley smile
