Costco Sheet Cake

Is it tacky to get a nice 3 tiered wedding cake from a bakery that can feed about 100 people with yummy flavors and pretty design, and then go and buy a plain sheet cake from Costco that won’t taste the same, look the same, or be of the same quality as the other cake for the other 150 guests??

As long as the cake is all from the same place, go ahead. I did that for my first wedding. It all tasted the same and it saved a lot of money.

PS - Costco cakes are the best - my kids both requested them for their HS graduation parties. Super yummy, in my humble opinion.

Agree with other posters. There is nothing wrong with sheet cakes, but they need to be from the same bakery as the tiered cake. Good on you, OP for shutting down something tacky that someone tried to tell you was a "good" idea.

Wow. That's even worse than serving your guests cheap cake while you eat the good stuff.

Ummmm... doing this would very much be tricking them.

OP, don't do this. Like others have said, get a matching sheet cake so you don't need a crazy 6-tier cake to serve all your guests.

The cake needs to be from the same place. There are very few things I’m very opinionated about but this is one of them. I would never want to serve a Costco cake with preservatives and inferior quality if others are getting locally made cake!

I think it all needs to be from the same bakery, be the same quality and flavor. Sheet cakes are totally fine! But get them from the same store.

I agree with PP that its like serving some guests steak while the others get meatloaf. Its not right. And if it is cost prohibitive, then you need to pick a cheaper cake or baker so that all your guests get the same quality of cake.

I don't know that I'd want to serve the "premium cake" to only half of my guests, but if I did I'd probably make it clear that the tiered cake was one flavor and the other one was a different flavor, so it would come down do the guests choosing e.g. chocolate vs. vanilla, rather than trying to have all one flavor and like, "hand-selecting" the people that get served the fancy cake and trying to pass off the sheet cake to the rest. I had a friend once who raved about her fancy fruit-flavored cake from a special bakery and then they cut that one, served it to the family and wedding party only, and then we just got served basic white cake. So tacky.

Definitely get the sheet cakes from the same bakery as the tiered cakes. It won't be that much more expensive, it will taste like the other cakes, and you won't have to worry about the logistics of dealing with two different bakeries.

I wouldn't necessarily say it's tacky, but kind of unfair that 1/2 of the guests get the pretty & delicious cake, while the other 1/2 get an overly sugary Costco cake. Those 150 guests will definitely remember that, and it won't be a good impression for them (in my opinion anyway), especially since most attendees look forward to the cake.

Have you tried looking to cupcakes for the guests instead of slices of cake? That's what we're doing. A small 2-tiered cake for us & the bridal party to enjoy, and cupcakes for everyone else. The cupcakes are much more cost-effective, but will still look pretty and have a good quality taste that every guest will enjoy as they're coming from the same bakery our wedding cake is.

We are going to have 1 single round cake for cutting which will likely go to the bridal party and cupcakes for the rest of the guest because our venue requires a $2.50 per slice cake cutting fee if we are serving cake (that is $500 for a wedding for 200 people on top of the price of cake.) We are not getting the cake and the cupcakes from the same place. It has nothing to do with my guest being "2nd class" it has to do with what we can afford and the fact that my bridal party will likely be missing out on the open bar and standing in the snow taking pictures and sacrificing a lot more than the rest of the guests. We also have 2 close family members that have a birthday on our day and we might give them a slice as well! This will literally save us HUNDREDS OF DOLLARS.

One of the biggest expenses I have read that people regret is CAKE! Some websites even suggest getting cake for 75% of guests, but I think that is more tacky than trying to find an affordable way to have cake for all guests. I have been to two wedding where there were 2 cakes and at neither did I feel excluded because I didn't get a certain kind of cake. At one we got served what we got served and they mixed and match the table at the other they had red velvet cupcakes for the guests and a cake fore the bridal party [neither or which had a dent in them by the end of the night]. I guess I don't pay attention to/or get offended by that stuff (like what time of cake did they feed) as much as everyone else, and I am just honored that I would be invited to their special day!

I am doing the same thing except mine aren't coming from the same bakery. We are getting our cake from wholefoods, and just having it simply frosted (white frosting) and our cake topper, so it likely won't look as fancy as the cupcakes.

If it's a cost issue, then let everyone eat the cheap cake. Don't treat your guests who aren't in the bridal party like they are beneath you. If you are dragging your bridal party out in the snow for pictures, then that's a you problem. If your BP is missing out on the open bar, that means you are keeping them during the reception for photos. Dragging them outside to freeze their butts off is rude.

Thank you all that gave kind and considerate advice without being judgmental. I really appreciate it. For those who were not as kind I’d like to make it clear that I never said I was going to do this nor that I even wanted to. As I said in my reply to the first commenter, I think it would be a tacky move and do not want to do it. I was frustrated by the person who suggested it to me and didn’t understand how it would be tacky. I wanted to hear from others to make sure I wasn’t alone in this. I plan on getting a sheet cake to be able to feed all of my guests, but it will be from the same bakery with the same flavors and such as my tiered cake.

I want the Costco layered w whipped frosting and whip filling and strawberries and blueberries on top. This cake is longer short style and delicious from Costco. Too many cakes can be dry and nobody eats them. I don’t want to waste 300 on a bakery wedding cake. Total would be 90 with the cutting fee. But it is a small wedding planned.

Additionally, I never said that anyone was getting "cheap cake." I said I am getting cupcakes for everyone beside BP from somewhere different than our cake. The cupcakes may even be fancier than our cake.
