Costco Sheet Cake

Rebekah, on July 31, 2018 at 6:38 AM Posted in Etiquette and Advice 0 47
Is it tacky to get a nice 3 tiered wedding cake from a bakery that can feed about 100 people with yummy flavors and pretty design, and then go and buy a plain sheet cake from Costco that won’t taste the same, look the same, or be of the same quality as the other cake for the other 150 guests??

It's not tacky to have sheet cake to serve but I wouldn't have a different sheet cake for some and a "better" wedding cake for others. If you want to do that, just get a one tier cake for cutting and then take that home for your first anniversary and get enough sheet cake for all the guests.

That’s exactly what I think. It wasn’t my idea. I’m just frustrated by the person who suggested it and wanted to get others opinions to make sure I’m not crazy.

Check with the bakery making the tiered cake to price a sheet cake that is the same flavor/frosting as the tier cake. The sheet version is likely to cost less than the tier. While more than a Costco sheet cake, it will be more economical than trying to serve 250 from a tiered cake.

The bakery doing my daughter's cutting cake (we're doing a dessert buffet so her cutting cake is very small and only serves 30) asked if we wanted a sheet cake with the same flavors, so it's certainly possible.

I’m definitely planning on doing this. It would be ridiculous to feed all my guests with a tiered cake. I’d need like 6 tiers or something

We are getting a 3 tiered cake and a sheet cake with our very first picture on it when we first starting dating from Walmart. Smiley smile

Those sheet cakes with the photo on them are kind of gross though. That weird gum paste or fondant or whatever they make the photo out of is not good.

I've been to a wedding where this happened. The sheet cakes were in the kitchen and the tiered cake was out on the dance floor. So the couple cut the tiered cake, fed bits to each other, and the tiered cake was rolled away to be cut by staff.

The bridal party got the tiered cake and everyone else received a piece of sheet cake. The difference was so painfully obvious and some of the guests were a bit upset. Especially since it wasn't a particularly large wedding (~100 people) and the cake looked like it was big enough to feed everyone.

We originally planned on a small 2 tier cake to serve us, the wedding party, our parents, and our grandparents, then Costco sheet cakes to serve all other guests. I don't think it's tacky to give guests that kind of cake, but I wouldn't give so many of them the "good" cake and then half the Costco cake. I know I'd be bummed as a guest if the person next to me had a pretty and unique cake and I got white sheet cake :/

Our bakery is making the tiered cake to serve 35 for $150, and a matching (flavor of cake, frosting, AND filling) sheetcake to serve 100 for $70. Costco would've been $40 so the extra cost was worth it. Check with your baker!

I am doing a small two tier cake and then sheet cakes from Costco, donuts, and cookies. A decent amount of people on my guest list prefer plain cakes so I don’t see it as a big deal.

That would be like giving some guests steak and the rest meatloaf.

think it’s s bad idea. There’s nothing wrong with having a small cake for cutting and a sheet cake for eating, as long as it’s the same cake from the same bakery. Nothing wrong with it dull being from Costco or anywhere else.

That's so terrible. Like when people use fake cakes and only one or two tiers are real. They eat the good bakery cake and serve the guests Wal Mart sheet cake.

Is the 2 tier cake also from Costco? That's where it gets sticky. When some people get gourmet cake and the rest get a grocery store sheet cake.

I would do two different flavors - like the tiered is white and the sheet cake is chocolate then set them on a cake station so people can choose what they want! So your not trying to trick them and they can pick which flavor they prefer Smiley smile Costco has good cake so I wouldn't worry about the taste Smiley smile If it wasn't for cake cutting fees I would have done sheet cake from Sam's Club Smiley smile

No it is not, but I have asked many people in my family (the ones who will be eating the Costco cakes) and they all enjoy them. I think if you know your crowd it’s fine.

If you go the sheet cake route, just make sure it's the same cake as the tiered cake. I would definitely not get two completely different cakes from two completely different places.

I agree. They need to be the same cake. Serving yourself a $200 designer cake and your guests $25 Wal Mart cake is like tiering your guests. Is it all cake? Yes, but hot dogs are pork and so is pork loin. It doesn't mean serving half of your guests one and half the other is ok..

We are doing something similar! We got a two tier cake for us to cut and for each bridal party member to have a slice and then everyone else is getting the Costco sheet cake.

We are getting tiered cakes and sheet cakes from the same baker. We ensured they'd be cut the same too so not only will they be the exact same flavor from the exact same baker, but they'll be cut similarly so we can avoid any confusion.

I don’t see anything wrong with serving a sheet cake but it needs to be the same as your tiered cake.

I was at a wedding where the top shelf wine, beer and alcohol was for the bridal party only and the guests only had boxed wine and draft beer and no alcohol. It was very obvious how they thought the guests were second best.
