Cost of engagement photoshoot?

Stephanie, on October 20, 2015 at 11:37 AM Posted in Planning 0 33

Hi Gals,

I'm recently engaged and have begun the whirlwind of wedding planning! Next on my list is to find a photographer to take engagement photos so I can start sending out save the dates.

But I'm wondering... how much does it cost for an engagement photoshoot if it's not included in the entire wedding package? What is a reasonable amount that won't break the bank?

Thanks for the feedback!

Well, I'm in Canada, so it probably won't match where you are, but here they range between CAD$150 and CAD$450, depending on the photographer and the number of hours.

    Mine was $450

ETA we got ours done in Florida and we had multiple locations and like 3 hours. Plus we got like 200 pictures back, all edited and full rights.

Mine was $125 but, then again I found mine on GROUPON. They would have cost me $650 for the photographer if I didn't go through groupon.

I'm in Canada too. It was $300 for the 2 hour session. We have to purchase our images separately.

Mine was $300, but it was an add on to our wedding package. It's for two hours and two locations.

My photographer gave me a discount and mine was $400. It would have been $600. The couple hundred dollar range seems average, but most wedding photographers seem to include it in their package, plus it's a good opportunity to "audition" a wedding photographer, so keep that in mind.

Mine was $350, and that included a $100 print credit. The session was about an hour/hour and a half and we had around 50 images to choose from. That didn't include the digital files, which we chose to buy for $450 (minus our credit). We ordered our own prints, posted the files online, and have been using the photos for all kinds of things.

Mine was included, but my photographer charges 550$ for engagement sessions if no wedding is booked. If you book your wedding with her later, she takes that amount off the total invoice.

I'm in Texas and it's included in my package. I just did the math and it's like $185 for the 2 hour shoot.

$200 for the shoot. I got about 150 pictures back (a few were double because they were black and white and then the same in color)

$250 for 1.5 hours in Colorado. Not sure how many pics we'll get back yet (dying to see them!).

$300 with rights to the images. Be careful with that - when I was looking into photographers, a lot of them advertised at $150, but then we had to pay extra for rights to the pictures. That usually was another $200.

Wow I didn't realize you had to buy the rights to your own photos..

I was thinking $200 would be a reasonable amount to pay for a 1-2 hr shoot, plus however long it takes them to edit the photos. It's so difficult to choose a photographer though!

@Stephanie - Not all photographers make you buy the rights. I don't know how common it is, I just ran across it because I was getting drawn in by $150 shoots. I also didn't realize buying rights was a thing. I ultimately stayed away from those because I disagree with that business practice. It seems like a bait and switch. I'd rather they tell me how much up front. The photographer I chose gave me one number for everything.
