Corset or Zipper back...opinions/advice needed!

Future Mrs. Wilson, on November 13, 2014 at 9:54 AM Posted in Wedding Attire 0 34

Good morning ladies. I've been thinking about my dress a lot (more so since it's been hanging in my closet instead of at my MOHs). I always thought I wanted to have a corset/lace up back on my wedding dress but mine just has a zipper. Has anyone had there's altered to be corset? Do you think it would look ok on my dress? I saw on someone's BAM the other day (can't remember whose) and she had a corset but you couldn't see the loose ends...do they just get tucked in the dress somewhere? I don't think it would look right on my dress to have the excess string tied in a bow or something. Any advice is greatly appreciated! Thanks in advance Smiley smile

Mine tucked into my dress. I loved my corset back. It made it fit like a glove.

I wore a strapless corset bra and I didn't have any problems.

I think I've seen a few posts here where brides alter a zipper dress to have a corset, so I'm sure it can be done. I'm a huge fan of corsets... they make fitting easier since they're adjustable, and they just look cool.

My dress is a corset back and it will get tucked into the dress.

I like my zipper back because it is easy to get in and out of. I originally thought about making it corset back because then it is easier to make it fit you perfect, but I don't know if it is worth the money for the alterations.

I'm altering mine to a corset from a zipper...I want to have a bit more flex in the movement and will be pushing the strings INTO the dress from bottom of the corset...I hate when they are loose or tied into a bow

I tried on so many corsets they really are awesome and the bridal consultants always told.me you could tuck the tie in or keep it out in a bow, and that they would teach whoever was with you on your.day to do it up right and all pretty. I like it on the outside in a bow but it does look neater and more put together tucked in. Despite all this, I ended up going with a dress.that has a zipper with crystal buttons all the way down to the train. Go figure ... my MOH and bm both prefer corsets (although they tell me they love my dress too). Corsets are easy peasy when alterations come into play, especially for girls losing (or who may have gained a little) weight.

Thanks for all the input ladies! My weight is constantly fluctuating within 5 pounds or so...sometimes the dress first perfectly, sometimes it's a little snug. I think with the corset I wouldn't have to worry as much, lol, which is one less thing to stress about. Plus I like the point you made Maltese...I think it won't be as hard to breath and I'll have the ability to move a little better with the corset. Hopefully it's not too expensive to do!

I like the way yours looks with the zipper. I hate corset backs. It reminds me of lingerie.

I love the way your dress looks! I wanted a corset back, but I'm also not a tiny person and it sucks you in a lot more, so I like the way it makes me feel. I tried dresses on with the zipper and I just didn't like that it wasn't as tight. I think your dress is beautiful though the way it is! Do what you think will make you feel the best!

Your dress has a zipper back ... so, I personally wouldn't mess with it.

I really like the way the zippered back looks on your dress, but I'm sure that a corset back would look amazing as well. I went with a corset back because I feel like it keeps me "in" better/the dress is more secured on my body than a zippered dress.

I prefer zipper backs. easier to get in and out of and it looks clean. i feel corset backing comes & goes and looks dated and theres hassle with lacing it properly, the extra string etc.

I personally think a corset back cheapens the look of the dress (no offense to anyone who has a corset back), The zipper looks more finished and structured to me, which I prefer. I wouldn't take chances with alterations that aren't needed, just in case.

I have an awkward body, so I'm going with a corset to really pull my waist in and not have to worry about not fitting exactly.

I actually had my corset changed to a zipper with buttons on top. To me, it looks a lot cleaner and the fit of your dress isn't dependent on someone's strength.

We tucked my estra string in. And then pinned it up. I had so much extra that it hit my ankles.

I love corset backs and I think you can totally getting away with altering your dress. They teach you (well whoever is helping you get your dress on) how to lace it up.

@MrsMoralesToBe, totally agree - no offense to anyone! It does look pretty, but after my FH said he thought it looked "cheap" I just couldn't do it! My dress has a zipper (actually could be ordered as either corset or zipper - Mori Lee Blu) and they are adding buttons, which fits really well with our more vintage feel of our wedding (and I love the button look!). Several other stores I'd been to had said they could do buttons on pretty much any zipper if wanted. Definitely worth asking what the store can order for you, and if they can't do the alterations you want, find a good seamstress - anyone worth their salt will be able to convert your dress for you if you decide you want a corset.

I think your gown looks beautiful just the way it is! Have you tried on any veils yet? That might totally change your decision of wanting a corset. I think a chapel veil would look great with you dress, maybe even with some lace detailing. If you still can't get the idea of the corset out of your head, talk to whoever is in charge of your alterations. In the end it is all up to you! I have always wanted a dress with buttons down the back, and mine doesn't have any. Everyone keeps telling me that it doesn't need anything added, but I might just still do it anyway.
