Corset or keep the hidden zipper

Joni, on May 15, 2015 at 11:01 AM Posted in Wedding Attire 0 25

My dress right now has a hidden zipper covered by buttons. As you can see in the picture(hopefully) the buttons continue onto the butt even though the zipper stops about 6 inches before.

Mine and DF's one want in a dress was a corset back. The seamstress said it can be done. I'd love some opinions. I'm really torn.

I like the hidden zipper, but do the buttons hurt to sit on?

I like the zipper with the buttons. I almost think a corset with buttons at the end would be too much.

Mine had the same thing...I changed to a corset...mainly for the comfort and being able to "give" a bit.

ETA: I left a couple inches of button/zipper at the bottom...its hard to tell in this photo and the zipper was still being altered at this time so it looks like its open

Like Mrs1720 I would wonder about how it would feel sitting on buttons. I think zipper vs. corset back is really a personal preference. My gown had a corset back but from the time I was a young girl, I always wanted a corset back on my gown. Some manufactures (I know Alfred Angelo did) allow a corset back as an option when the dress is ordered. Is that an option for them (especially as you said it was one of the wants in a dress, It certainly is something to consider).

I'm not a huge fan of corset backs and I love the look of covered buttons. I think they're so classic.

I do like how it is right now but I personally like corset backing so I am having one put on mine.

I have the hidden zipper covered with buttons, and it was definitely something I wanted for various reasons... I like the look, I can put it on by myself, etc.

However, lately as I'm waiting for my dress to come in, I can see the benefit to the corset back too... sizing can give a bit, for one!

I never really understood why people chose to change out the back. However seeing @maltese picture changes my mind, I think it looks great!

@Meggie...I never did either before. And it was a hard decision that I kept tossing back...in the end, I went with comfort over anything.

The buttons do hurt to sit on and if i sit for extended periods, it kind of bunches up the covering that keeps the zipper covered higher up the back. The seamstress mentioned hidden stitched for the day of to keep it laying down.

I have the hidden buttons and love it. I never considered the corset because I think it would take away the classic look of my dress.

I love buttons. I don't like how corsets look, I feel like it breaks up the look of the dress. And it's weird because I used to be obsessed with corset backs. But then I saw the button/zipper ups and I just love them. I was so glad that my dress could be ordered with the hidden zipper covered by the buttons. Otherwise it would have looked so weird with a corset on the back and then buttons down the bottom.

I love the look of the buttons with the hidden zipper. I think there is something classic and timeless about it. But I totally understand the appeal of a corset back and think that sometimes, like Tania said, you can get a better fit because you can shape the laces to your body. (Then again, I also wear corsets on a semi-regular basis so I will definitely be wearing one under my dress!)

Excuse my Fat back....I've lost weight since then

I *personally* think that corsets look sloppy on me, I don't think there's a reason why the seamstress can't tailor that sucker to fit you just as well as a corset back would. There are reasons to do it (allowing for weight fluctuation, especially), but I prefer a well tailored zipper.

    Thanks for all the feedback!

Sonya, thank you so much for sharing a picture of you in your dress. I actually have never tried on my dress in a way that fit me(major clipping required) so it's great to see it so well tailored on someone else.

I love how the buttons look, and very much dislike corset backs. I get why they're practical and better suited for certain body types, but from a purely aesthetic point of view, I don't think they look great. If it ultimately makes the dress look better on you, then that makes sense, but I wouldn't change it just for the look. The buttons look elegant!

I am a huge ran of the hidden zipper/buttons! Personally, I don't care for corset backs. That was my number one thing when I was looking for my dress!
