Coordinating Dress Whites

Rachel, on January 5, 2012 at 5:19 PM Posted in Wedding Attire 0 12

So, this isn't a big issue, but I thought it might be good to get opinions.

FH is in the navy and will be wearing his "Dress Whites" for the wedding. I think that will be great since it is a bit more unique and personal while also being budget friendly(no tux rental!). I have two questions though.

First: Since his uniform is WHITE white, does that mean I should probably get a white dress rather than ivory? I'm wondering if ivory might look dingy or out of place next to his stark white uniform.

Second: my dad is retired navy and could possibly wear his uniform as well. Since he was also a navy officer, he would likely wear the same uniform. Is that too weird? Something just weirds me out about my FH and my father wearing the same outfit at my wedding. Like twins.....Is it just me?

Absolutely get a white dress rather than ivory, it would look yellowish next to white.

I don't think it seems weird for your dad to be wearing his dress whites too, but I don't really know!

My FH is Air Force, and will be wearing his dress blues. His dad, best man, one of the groomsman, his uncle and my grandpa will all also be in Air Force dress blues, as well as other branches of military in their dress uniforms. It doesnt look weird because its a uniform. its the same as them all wearing matching tuxes.

We are having a military uniform and invited all military members to wear their dress uniform if they would like, most men are most women are opting to wear a dress, except my mom who hates dressed so she will also be in her dress blues because shes retired Air Force.

I'd probably get a white dress...I think you might be right...the ivory next to white would look dingy. I know when we got the tux rentals through MW, they suggested ivory shirts under the tuxes (even though you wouldn't see them much) and an ivory vest and tie for DH b/c I was wearing an ivory dress.

Are all navy uniforms white? I feel like maybe you and your FH should be the only ones in white and that you two should stand out from everyone else...just my opinion.

And I would definately go with a White dress or you will look off-white or dingy next to him.

No all Navy uniforms are not white. They do have dress blues. The white one is a traditional uniform with the dixie cup hat. When FH's friend got married he wore his blue dress uniform and his wife wore an ivory gown. Looked beautiful.

I was an officers wife, got married at the Academy, yes, summer dress uniforms are all white, if your dad is going to wear his uniform and its summer it will be regulation to wear the whites, in the summer the only other uniform is the khaki daily uniform.(for officers, and Im sure you already know you dont want that :/ ) The only blue dress uniform is winter. For the men, if the groomsmen are also officers wearing their uniforms they will be dressed just like the groom. My civilian groomsmen wore white dinner jackets with black pants and they matched "just enough". Its not weird to have them all dressed the same, its actually very nice. If you do the sword arch be sure to have a kind groomsmen on your side at the end Smiley winking The only time I've ever seen a Navy bride wear any other color than white was for an informal wedding and it was a bold color. (GO NAVY! BEAT ARMY!!)

Thanks guys. Looks like there's a consensus that I should wear a white dress instead of ivory.

I guess my problem isn't exactly just that my dad would match him, although I agree with cyndey that it would be nice for us to be the only ones in white. I just don't want them to look too much alike. I guess I just don't want to feel like I'm marrying my dad(that's kind of a weird way to put it). It would be different if they were others also in uniform, but they'd be the only two.

Thinking about it though, I can really imagine walking down the aisle with my dad in his uniform. I just don't like the idea of the two of them standing next to each other.

@karen thanks, this was something I had been wondering about. My mom mentioned something about having to wear the whites because it will be summer. They wear them so rarely I wasn't entirely sure on the rules.

Rachel- you could also look at a platinum or blush colored dress if you didnt really want to wear a true white.

My FH is also Navy, we haven't decided on uniform or tux for our June wedding yet. However, my uncle is CWO4 in the Navy and he told me that if a groom chooses to, he is allowed to wear his dress blues to his own ceremony regardless of time of year because it is not a Navy regulated event.

The only rule to be followed in this situation is that if any other military uniforms are going to be worn, they must follow the groom's suit. Ex: groom wears dress blues, all military wearing uniforms also wear dress blues.

I personally think the the dress blues look gorgeous next to a wedding dress. If you do opt for the dress whites, wear a white dress, not ivory, to match,
