Controversial Wedding Song

mrsW2be, on October 2, 2010 at 9:35 PM Posted in Etiquette and Advice 0 20

Just wondered if this was a tacky and bad idea...

I want to walk down the aisle to Hallelujah. Specifically to an instrumental version by the Vitamin String Quartet :

I know the lyrics are not flattering. It's about religion and sex and a lot of things no one really understands. But seeing as there will be no voice actually singing it, is it okay to use? The Jeff Buckley version is my favorite:

but all our other ceremony music is Vitamin String Quartet so we're sticking with the instrumental versions of everything.

Thanks!

I love that song, even if the lyrics are a bit depressing. You should go for it, no one can complain about the lyrics if they can't hear them and you obviously love the song too or you wouldn't have chosen it!

I think the song sounds nice. Just as long as it's instrumental you are fine. I like the second version best by Jeff Buckley.

Music sets the tone for your ceremony, and if the song best encapsulates your vision of walking down the aisle, then the lyrics are irrelevant. It's about setting a mood. And besides, no one will be paying attention to the lyrics because everyone will be looking at YOU! :-)

Congratulations on your engagement! :-) weddingwire.com/elitesoiree

Your ceremony is all about the two of you. Use any song that you enjoy. Especially if it is instrumental. I have a bride and groom coming up that are using an orchestra instrumental of Metallica - Nothing Else Matters. There is pretty much no way to go wrong when choosing your music. Congrats and enjoy!!!

This is actually one of my ALL time favorites. I don't think its a big deal at all, especially without lyrics. I love the string version. Chances are, the people who actually recognize the song are probably fans of it, so they wouldn't have a problem Smiley smile

And by the way, they've actually made a Christian version of this song Smiley smile I'm trying to find it now..

Ugh, I can't seem to find it. But I know for a fact I've heard it on the Christian radio station in FS's mom's car lol They leave out a lot of the bad parts and just focus on the hallelujah parts.. And it was actually really pretty.

My point is, there IS an appropriate version out there.. So that can be your argument if anyone says anything Smiley winking

You should be able to walk down to whatever you want to. It is your day. I walked down the aisle to Miley Cyrus' "When I Look At You." Some might not have liked it and one of my BM asked why I picked it and it was because I liked the song. I really didn't care what people thought it was my day and if I liked it that should be what I walk down too. Same goes for you.

I don't know how any version of that song wouldn't be "Christian," although I guess since it's Old Testament you could argue that it's Jewish. :-)

I love that song, but honestly, I would not use it in a wedding--not because of the references to sex or religion, but because it has a sad ending. (Our recessional was a song in Swedish that is basically about having sex outside in the sunlight, which I thought was nice for an outdoor desert wedding.)

Admittedly, t's not at the same level of wedding wrongness as "She Moved Through the Fair," which I've heard a couple of people say they were using and which I find appalling because in the song the woman is DEAD. But I still wouldn't want to associate it with my wedding.

BUT, that's just me. Obviously it's your decision. :-)

It's so crazy I was just thinking about this a couple weeks ago. I think the instrumental shouldn't be that big a deal because honestly, most people don't even know what the song is about lol. It wasn't until I researching the string quartet did I actually look at the lyrics and go "wtf". IMO

I agree that if there are no lyrics, who can be offended?

My first dance is Crazy Little Thing Called Love. Some of the lyrics aren't really appropriate, but I just like the beat and feel of the song. Plus we are swing dancing to it. So who cares??

We love this song and although we are not heavily religious, we are faith bound and FH wants this song at our wedding but ants me to walk down the aisle to a traditional bridal march which I was shocked by. I love this song. I think your idea is great!

Thanks for your opinions Smiley smile We don't associate ourselves with any form of organized religion. I'm agnostic and my FH is an atheist, therefore, no church wedding here. It's actually almost too spiritual for him, but he enjoys the melody and is a fan of good music! I also looked it up in the dictionary and definition #2 read: to express joy. I think it's a keeper! I have never pictured myself using the actual bridal march and I'm not going to Smiley smile
