Collecting envelopes as reception.

Hi everyone. I am not sure what do for collecting the cards that are given to you at the wedding. My soon to be mother in aw says I should walk around with a bag and collect them as I greet everyone at the reception. I thought it was just beat to put a card box on the table. What do you think?

I had a beautiful card box and 10% of guests actually used it. Everyone kept saying, "I don't want to put money in there! It could it could get stolen. Don't you have a bag with you to hold them?" I had never heard of this before my wedding. When we walked around to greet the tables people handed us cards and we handed them to the Bestman. I'm not exactly sure what he did with them while we were there but he handed us our card box and a separate gift bag filled with cards.

I said all that to say the "oddness" depends on the crowd.

Honestly, if you are worried about guests stealing your cards. I would revisit the guest list.

@Kathryn, it's not that I'm specifically worried about my guests stealing the gifts, but I have heard some horror stories. Also both my mother and FHs grandmother separately told me not to have one, so that what's pushing me away from one.

I have heard that too, but pray for the sake of humanity that wouldn't happen.

I heard one where the father stole the card box and the groom caught him in the parking lot. :o(

Isn't that what they did in Goodfellas? Only time I remember seeing it.

We also did a card box, although when we walked around to greet guests some gave their cards in person.

Cards getting stolen is most likely in a big venue with several events going on at the same time. However, I have definitely heard of people stealing cards even at a wedding at which they are guests!

Birdcages can be at least a partial solution, because you can put a lock on them. It's hard to get cards out if the bird cage is locked. And walking out with a big birdcage would be a lot more conspicuous than walking out with a bunch of cards.

The bag thing IS a custom but it's very old / outdated now and most guests will not expect it and may side-eye it. A card box is much more common now.

I'm not sure my card box will have a lid, but I'm going to assign someone in my family to clean it out every now and then and put it in the back room that is secure. At least that is my current thought. But I'm also not going to have it near any entrance. I think it is more about outside people or vendors.

I bought an inexpensive Martha Stewart card box on Amazon. I added some crystals and a thank you sign and it looked very nice.

I'm planning on maybe making a box or buying a cheap one off of etsy.
